Is there a store/site you would recommend for higher quality furniture other than restoration hardware? I am looking for similar styling for use in a small office. Desk and conference tables. Appreciate any suggestions.

It can take a while, alright! We just had a horrible experience getting two recliners we ordered from the Restoration Hardware Web site. It took three months and then when the chairs arrived, they were the wrong color. In the three months it took the chairs to get here, RH ran out of the color we ordered and it was no longer available. So we ended up back at Square One after waiting for three months!

The customer service reps had only minimal information about where these chairs were or when they would arrive. At one point, a customer service rep told me that the manufacturer was "not responding to our inquiries." They gave us three different shipping dates, and only the last one turned out to be accurate.

Twice, customer service reps told us they would call us back "within one or two business days" and once a rep said she would call me back that afternoon. They did not honor any of these promises. I e-mailed them at the customer service e-mail address given on their Web site and got no response to my e-mail.

I will never order from Restoration Hardware Web site again and not from a store unless they have the product on site or at least unless they have it at another store or in a warehouse in this city.

Thanks for your comment!! I try not to buy furniture or very expensive items on line. It seems like too much of a gamble to me. I loved the style of some of the Restoration Hardware pieces but was so disappointed when I saw them in the store. I agree that quality varies significantly and it makes sense to check first, especially if the return policy is difficult. I am glad you found items you really like. I hope you enjoy them for many, many years.

Furniture quality (Reply to this comment)

Hi, modernmarvel,

We just bought a lot of stuff from RH. Your excellent review was what first introduced me to the stores in the first place, so thanks!

I also have a comment on the quality of their wood furniture--I think that this varies greatly from piece to piece. I agree with webguy about some items. E.g., their Marston and Mission lines of wood furniture are fantastic... solid cherry and oak, well crafted, and sturdier than most of what you'll find at comparable stores (like Pottery Barn, Ethan Allen). But surprisingly, the majority of their other pieces (of comparable price) are incredibly flimsy! It's definitely wise to check out these things carefully in the store before you buy. But they do have some nice stuff, which we're now enjoying.

I have only really considered their wood pieces of furniture. I like the styles but when I visited them in the store, I found the pieces to be lightweight and almost flimsy. The finishes seem less involved than other furniture I have looked at. They may be difficult to clean and maintain. I have several old pieces of furniture from the 50s picked up at estate sales. These old pieces have real weight to them and still look good after 50 years. Plus, the finishes are much higher quality than you would see in Restoration Hardware. I think it is worthwhile to shop elsewhere if you are looking for furniture to last.

specifics as to which Restoration furniture pieces you thought had quality issues. Sofar, their dressers I've seen locally are several cuts above the typical mall furniture in terms of materials and construction. One other factor may be their use of exterior finishes--a look that either suits or repels the furniture shopper.

It can take a long time to receive large mail order items (sometimes 3 weeks) so plan ahead if it is something you really need. They are having a post-Christmas sale now. Hopefully, your wish list will be 50% off.
