Cars Direct .com online - like wearing a raincoat in a shower
by CyndiA | Dec 18 '02
There are a number of online car sellers online now, and having access to info does give the buyer a leg up. Cars Direct is a decent site, but I would not rank it at the top, because they still play those car lot games. When I was buying my Nissan...

I, too, wonder what items Carsdirect supposedly does not include. If they don't include taxes and tags, they certainly could easily enough. It would be a service, since many dealers overcharge for tags.

Purchased using CarsDirect and would again. (Reply to this comment)

In January 2003, I purchased a new Mazda. I selected the options I wanted, and the price shown on the CarsDirect page was the amount I brought to the dealer. Even the Mazda dealer (El Cajon, Calif) told me using CarsDirect is the best way to get the lowest price. Later my brother bought a Toyota using CarsDirect and thinks he saved himself thousands of dollars. I plan to use CarsDirect again soon. Want more could I want but the lowest price and as little time as possible with car sales people. I hate haggling, and CarsDirect lets me avoid it.

Do not understand the complaints (Reply to this comment)

I also do not quite understand what CyndiA is complaining about. CarsDirect shows you the price depending on the options you select, not just for the basic trim. If you do not want floor mats, do not select them. Now, there may not be a model in your area, which matches the exact options you pick, so CarsDirect will try to find the closest match. If all cars in your area come with floor mats, tough luck (it would be nice if you could ask the dealer to keep them, though, but I don't think you can do this). This is not the CarsDirect problem, you have to address this to the manufacturer. Now if the car they find is acceptable to you but has different options, it will be priced differently from what you see originally (and not necessarily more expensive), but it will be consistent with the pricing on their site (if you enter the same options, you will see the same price). The base price seems to be important, though, because if it is the lowest you can get (among other sites/dealers), the final price for the model with the options you choose will probably also be the best. If you see a better price for the base model at Edmunds or anywhere else, by any means, try them first. There may be additional charges added by the dealer (such as documentation, registration, tax, and tire fee in CA), but CarsDirect has no control over these and in some cases (such as registration fee), it can be really hard to determine (even dealers make mistakes calculating it sometimes). And you will have to pay these fees anyway, independent on who you get the car from: CarsDirect, Edmunds, Autobytel, etc. By the way, I just bought a new RAV4 using CarsDirect and have nothing but positive experience (I am going to post a review later).

Hi Sculder--Tks for your comments. This review is 2 years old now. Companies (especailly online) make a lot of changes over time. I can only speak to my experiences when I was in the market for a car. I didn't find this site as strong in 2002 as other car sites. In fact, I found that going to a local dealership was my best bet. But, only after doing a lot of research online. That way I could deal much better knowing that I had options. When I look for my next vehicle, I'll check online again. I do love online shopping. The only thing is that I don't buy vehicles very often. I take good care of cars and trucks and run them until they die. If you have new info to add, please do write a review. It helps everyone a lot when we have a range of ideas and thoughts up about online spots. I do update reviews for online when I have new info. It's just hard to update and add new info when it's a place I don't use every week--like a car buying site. I am glad to hear that the experience is better now, and I will check them out again when I buy another vehicle.

Not so sure I agree (Reply to this comment)

You mentioned that CarsDirect listed the price for the "base" model only. That isn't true. I have frequented that site to research a car I'm about to purchase. When you search for a price on a car, they ask you to select a trim level, and even list what that trim level includes. You only get pricing for the base model if that's what you choose.

Then, on the next page you can add any options. I'm not sure why you would complain about this. Some people may want to add a sunroof, that isn't standard on that trim level. Or some people may want an automatic as opposed to a stick. This allows you to add or delete options to see how it affects the price. That, I would think, is a good thing.

As for other fees, I'd like to know what other fees were NOT included in that price. My understanding is that the price they give you includes all fees. It tells you the price of the car, plus the price of all selected options, plus the destination charge, along with any customer AND factory to dealer rebates (which they are very upfront and honest about, while many local dealers won't advertise a rebate so they can keep the money for themselves - and I know this for a fact since CarsDirect is showing a $2000 rebate for the car I want, and all the local dealers show only $1500). The only other fees which they do not include are taxes and registration. But, that would be very difficult for them to add into the price on the pricing page since it is dependent on the individual states and local sales tax rates. That would be easy enough to determine on your own.
