A Four Year Veteran Reflects on Buying At eBay
by Joubert | Dec 19 '02
Today is my fourth anniversary at eBay.

Using Alexa’s WayBack Machine (archive.org), I was able to see what first attracted me to the site in December 1998. The front page boasted of 1.3 million items for sale in over one thousand...

Margaret,

The benefits of the calculator listed in this review (via a web link) over the USPS Calculator is that the seller sets the way the package will be mailed and is able to add any handling fee as well. The USPS site would allow a buyer to chose a shipping method this isn't legal for the item (say media mail for magazines...media mail cannon have advertisements), or allow them to choose Parcel Post when the seller only offers Priority.

Hope that explains why some would use the Zonalyzer over the USPS calculator (and not all sellers send items UPS).

With eBay, the Seller sets the shipping method & price.

Thanks,
Connie

....both buying and selling and your review was perfect! I've had great selling experiences and a few that made me want to reach through the computer and see just who it was at the other end.

I can't recommend the Community Boards on eBay highly enough--for buyers and sellers! You'll learn so much and meet some great people.

Best advice I can give? Never use your eBay seller ID anywhere else on the net--even here. People have been known to sabotage auctions of people for something they wrote on a totally unrelated board (nope, this isn't my eBay ID).

Thanks again for the great review!

A very cogent and informative review, George.... (Reply to this comment)

You managed to summarize a lot in relatively few words. My eBay forays have been very limited, and results mixed. But I write much of that off to my inexperience with the site.

Nicely done.

Best wishes for the holidays.

1. In my three years of occasional buying on Ebay, I've only had one transaction go sour, and that was when the seller got crazy on me. I didn't leave feedback because it would have been negative and he would have buried it because of his huge number of transactions, while trashing my small feedback file. Now I wish I had left a neutral message: "E-mail me before doing business with this person." Nothing for him to respond to. Next time, if it happens again.

2. Marsha Collier's site is, as you say, very helpful; I hadn't seen it before. But a shipping charge calculator is readily available at both USPS.org and UPS.com.

3. There's an active forum of Ebayers that any member can join. It's under the Community tab in the upper right corner. Organized is a less than optimal way, it still provides active conversation between members on a wide variety of subjects, and includes the active participation of Ebay staff ("pinks," for the color in which their responses are shaded) for the tough questions. I've found it very useful for sharing and obtaining information and answers to my questions.

Nice review - thanks!

...your true story made me think of when I was selling a lot on eBay.

The kids got worried that I was going to sell everything that we owned. Pretty soon they are calling me and saying "Mom, don't sell the hutch I want it someday!" Even now, if I can't find something they all chime in saying "you probably sold it on eBay!" LOL

It was great fun selling...and it is where I got my kamel622 name...

Thanks for the fun review George...and Happy Holidays.......kath

I'm guessing The Perfect Clock was unavailable in Wal-Mart? Ain't eBay great for stuff like that?

True story: we stopped for a hamburger at some restaurant owned by Dick Clark. Along with the check comes a package of trading cards for each person at the table. They're like baseball cards, but for musicians.

I opened up all five packs when we got home and sold the cards individually on eBay for $1-$5 each. What a country!

Thanks for sharing details of the Great Cuckoo Adventure.

Perfect Shopping Therapy! (Reply to this comment)

When the Consort is on the far side of the planet and I am feeling particularly blue, I wander over to eBay and browse around, often finding swell goodies to lift my spirits. Just the other night, as I was contemplating the gloom of spending yet another Christmas with just the assorted critters for company I got a nice lift from eBay.

I've been lusting for an old cuckoo clock since I was a small kiddo. Lo and behold, I found a pretty antique one in an auction that was ending in 53 minutes (the eBay equivalent of instant gratification and, I confess, I too, am a sniper. Zipping into the last minutes of an auction and grabbing up the loot is a great rush). I put in my maximum bid and wandered off to do something else. A gabby friend called and kept me on the phone for more than an hour with her tales of romantic woe. By the time I got back to check in, the auction was over and I got my clock for $6 under my maximum bid! Oh joy, oh joy, and a great happy dance ensued and I actually felt less lonely for a brief time. Now I have the anticipation of opening the box and hanging the thing on a wall where it will create the greatest cat excitement and consternation.
