How to *choose* a web service...

The Bottom Line Compare, browse and research web services before you commit yourself, and remember, you shouldn't have to pay for most web services!

With all of the new internet companies, how do you choose one that is for you?

Start with a search engine. I usually start with Yahoo.ca (the Canadian version of Yahoo.com.) There, you type in what type of information you are looking for, and you can browse from there.

Research. You're here right now, so why not use Epinions.com to research? For instance: If you're looking to buy flowers online, why not go to Epinions.com and type it in the search box? It will give you many reviews of people who have used their services -- people just like you!

Browse! Don't just take the first offer you find. You can usually find a better deal, and you might as well look for that deal before you purchase. Search engines can help you find similar companies and products. Online Auctions can also find you a better price, as long as you don't mind that the product has been used before. (Note: Before you use an online Auction, do read up on their service at Epinions. I've noticed some Auctions out there don't enforce the seller to send the product after they receive the money.)

Compare! There are many sites on the internet that are dedicated solely to comparing products for consumer use. It's often helpful to compare certain products to other products. Often, you will come up with more efficient products than the one you'd have originally purchased.

Free? With all the advertising companies out there, most internet services should be free. (for instance, email, classifieds, auction participation, etc.) Advertisers pay the company to display ads with your service, so you shouldn't have to pay them as well.

Money making services: If you're interested in trying out a way to make money on the internet, make sure you get paid in cash. (well, check is good too, but you know what I mean!) Often when paid in gift certificates, you have to spend a certain amount of money at the site first. They are making money off you, instead of you making money from them.

Final thoughts: With all of the new companies out there, it's hard to decide who deserves your loyal support, or who you should bypass. Just keep in mind that on the internet, it's a fair population. They should be competing for YOUR business. Browse and research for deals and opportunities. Don't pay money for a service that should be free. Compare products and services. Just because an ad says they have the lower price, doesn't mean they do!

Good Luck!
