Sears.com is the Internet version of warehouse shopping. If you want service, go elsewhere. On the plus side, Sears offers a wide selection - especially of good-quality major appliances - and you can get good prices if you're patient.
My most recent experience with Sears.com was a bit rocky, but ultimately satisfactory. I ordered three appliances - a washer, dryer and dishwasher, during a three-hour "10% off everything" promotion. All three items were also on sale, so my net discount was about 25% overall. I had no trouble placing the order; but the fun started soon thereafter. That afternoon, I received an e-mail message from Sears indicating that the dishwasher order had been canceled because the item was unavailable. I checked Sears.com, found the item still being offered, and sent an irate message to customer service. They responded three days later, explaining that the model was indeed still available, but that I would have to wait two or three weeks. I wrote back that the delay would not be a problem (in fact, the website had warned me of the wait when I placed the order), and that I would like the order reinstated. After receiving no reply for two days, I called the 800 number and, after a long wait on hold, managed to re-book the order. Unfortunately, the new order did not reflect the original discounts, so I had to navigate Sears customer service a couple more times to correct the price. Overall, a miserable experience, but I got the Kenmore appliances I wanted for a very fair price.
Additional suggestions for Sears.com shoppers:
1. Subscribe to their e-mail list. They don't send much spam, and you will receive advance notice of "10% off everything" promotions.
2. Never pay their list price unless you're in a big hurry. Everything at Sears.com goes "on sale" pretty regularly, which means their list prices are inflated.
