Without a doubt, the sportswriters for the Boston Globe are among the very best in the business. The sports section in the Globe is as well-written as it is informative, and the fusion of regional and national sports coverage is impressive. Writers such as Bob Ryan, Dan Shaughnessy and Michael Holley are clearly the best at what they do. Ryan is a sarcastic, yet witty writer who approaches sports with tongue firmly in cheek. Shaughnessy is a local legend, known as the man who wrote "The Curse of the Bambino", a book which has impacted the Boston sports psyche for years. Some of us would prefer that Mr. Shaughnessy never invented the infamous "curse", but he nevertheless remains an excellent and outspoken writer who is worth reading. Finally, Michael Holley primarily covers the basketball scene, and he writes with a deep knowledge of today's NBA and its players. He is fairly new to the scene, but he has quickly become one of the Globe's best young writers.
The Globe is worth purchasing for its sports coverage alone. I unfortunately can't say the same for its local rival, the Boston Herald. While the Herald has improved somewhat in recent years, the writing suffers in comparison with the Globe. If you truly love sports, the Boston Globe is the way to go...
