What did you say the fork was for again?Feb 10 '01 (Updated Feb 12 '01) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line See opinion Wow what's happening here at epinions. They REALLY want to help people anyway they can. I just couldn't resist writing in this category. I saw this the other day and about died laughing. We now have a category for when people wondered why, when they ate soup with a fork they never tasted anything, or when they tried to cut a steak with a spoon it wouldn't work, so they ended up ripping the meat off with their teeth. My goodness. Well for those of us who were raised by wolves here goes. Oddly enough I just recently attended an etiquette workshop with my daughter for a brownie assignment, so now I have the low down on the utensil thing. I will just elaborate on the 3 main utensils and leave out the soup spoon, the salad fork, and the spork (that utensil Kentucky Fried Chicken gives you, very confusing if your just starting out) since most people just use the basic three. First comes the fork. This is usually placed on the left side of the plate when setting the table. There are 4 tines on it for eating with. Generally a fork is used for salads, potatoes, rice, pasta, desserts, and side dishes. You hold the fork in your hand and gently stab the wanted food and put it in your mouth. For rice or mash potatoes you can scoop it up. Then on the right side of your plate are the knife and spoon. The knife is closest to the plate when setting the table. It has a sharp edge on it for cutting and is general not used to put food in your mouth. It can cut meat, baked potatoes, or anything a fork cannot stab. (This is crazy!!) A butter knife, which has a not so sharp edge is used to spread butter,(hence the name!)cream cheese, mayo, or any condiments you may be using. Lastly comes the spoon. The spoon is a great starter utensil for kids and babies. They can easily scoop there food and get it into there mouth, where as a fork the food would fall off. The hand-eye coordination hasn't set in yet. Anyway spoons are used for soups, and small foods a fork just can't pick up, such as maybe rice or small beans. Spoons are also used for ice cream, yogurt, applesauce (although chunky applesauce can be used with a fork) One thing to point out. Utensils often are used for banging against plates or glasses when someone wants to be heard, such as a speech at a wedding, or big event. So anyone who has recently come out of the woods after leaving your wolf parents, I hope this was helpful to you. Please note this opinion was just for fun. Check out some of the "how to" categories, even if you don't write about something they are good for a laugh. |
