Pros: A lighter side of trip hop; relaxing; nobody dislikes it; better than Goldfrapp
Cons: Sometimes bland & overly smooth; not quite dark enough for serious late night sessions
The Bottom Line: It's very good. No Trip Hop collection is really complete without it but it can't quite get full marks because within this genre there is also Portishead.
adamocerquetti's Full Review: Formica Blues by Mono (Trip Hop)
This is a lighter side to trip hop with a less stoned ambience than massive attack or portishead. Oddly, the style of Mono combines breakbeat with elements of John Barry (James Bond themes), but also has a slightly retro pop feel. Musically it is very high end, with good vocals, great basslines, especially on the last track (a remix of 'Life In Mono'). The track 'High Life' is almost an exact copy of a Petula Clark track and should be avoided.
The album is now delisted in the UK, which in a way adds to its esoteric appeal. I tend to group it together with other slightly less known downtempo mid/late 90s artists such as Smoke City and Archive. If you like them then you'll like Mono.
