Run Away! Run Away!

Written: Feb 07 '01
Pros:Not many. It hasn't caused a fire...yet. Price, but you get what you pay for.
Cons:Malfunctions galore, frustration, no product support.
The Bottom Line: I will end this review as I started it; UGH. Please don't buy this piece of garbage, save yourself the migraines and maybe even some sanity.

This Epinion is on the 500MHZ Version of the AMD-K6(tm)2 Processor.

Ugh. This component has caused nothing but frustration and new levels of aggravation for me. From the time I got my PC I have encountered nothing but problems. I have had fatal errors, which on the whole require re-boots on top of re-boots. This can be extremely mind-numbing when you are working on a document and have to re-boot your computer every five minutes because this "processor" decides to act up.

Sure this thing is cheap, but there is a reason, it sucks. This processor seems to have some sort of beef with Windows based applications. Hmmm, seeing how Microsoft applications have overrun the earth, this can be a slight problem.

I have researched many of the errors I encounter on-line and the solutions are not easy for a non-techie to resolve. I want trouble free operation whether I am typing a proposal or checking my email on-line. The AMD K6 2 makes sure that this doesn't happen easily.

Here's a sample error: "Fatal Error has occurred at 0028:C0005338 VXD VMM(01) + 00004338." Now, do I know what this means? Heck no! But if you enter it on the web, people with this same processor have had the same error code come up and have suggested some solutions. Most of these involve fudging with your BIOS settings and/or changing your CPU voltage. Neither of these processes is a newbie do-it "yourselfer." You can seriously wreck your system when you start fiddling with these settings. So proceed at your own risk. Better yet, just steer way clear of this piece of junk.

I am not usually sold on name brands alone. I said "Pentium Schemntium" and I gave AMD a chance, but I am never going to buy anything made by AMD again. Ever. I'm strapped for cash now, but once I can save up some major change, "HELLO new PC with a Pentium processor."
