| tommy_lop's Full Review: Super Metroid for Super Nintendo |
Ok I'll admit Metroid isnt my all time favorite game for the NES, but several years ago when I rented Super Metroid I didnt know what to expect. I mean the commercials looked cool with the advertisement putting a big pitbull in a room, and scared stiff chiahuah reemerged. Well after playing it I bought it and it's become one of the best games in my collection.
Story.
Space bounty hunter Samus has destroyed the evil Metroid parasites both on planet Zebes, and on there home planet. The only one left now is a small baby Metroid which follows Samus around has a pet. Giving it to scientist at a space colony to study, thinking that the Metroid menace was over she went off in search of new bounty. When she gets an sos from the space colony. The space pirates of Zebes are back and theyre after the Metroid.
Graphics.
For the Time Metroid was probably the best out there, the graphics are smooth. The background fit the area's perfectly. Then there are the big bosses. The new Mother Brain and the Super Metroid that you have to battle at the end are huge. Has for Samus well she finally looks like an arm to the teeth bounty hunter in a super suit, rather then a bug eyed alien in yellow spandex like she did in the original.
Sound.
The music in this has an errie mix to it, but then if your hunting down alien parasites underground it would be errie to. The blister sound effects like they should but nothing special. There are also a few simple NES tunes left over from the original.
Gameplay.
All right this is where the game takes off from it's original. The original one used cheap tricks that just frustrated the heck out of me, multiple rooms that where the same, along with the fact that there where hidden rooms that where impossible to find. Super Metroid skips this approach and actually delivers what the original Metroid was suppose to be. Each room looks different and the maze is huge. There are maps to the area's so it's harder to get lost, and there is an x-ray device that you can get to se through fake walls.
This is of course nothing compared to Samus new abilities that she can learn. She starts off with just the jump and fire like the original. After exploring a little bit you get the missiles and the ability to roll into a ball, like in the original.
But then your able to combine weapons old ones like the wave and ice, to new ones like charge and plasma gun. Along with the new improve guns there are also new special weapons, super missiles and super bombs, these are needed to get past certain obstacles and doors.
To add to this is the ability for Samus to change suits, one suit protects you against fire, and the other lets you fight underwater.
Bad things
There are a few bad things about the game, there's 2 to be exact. The first bad thing is that this game is incredibly short, take about 6 hours for the first time through when you have no idea of what your doing, and less then 2 after that. Of course the game is time and the faster you go through the game, the more of Samus you get to see at the end. Maybe it's because I have been spoiled by the newer Castlevania games that take the same approach, but it does seem like the game could be a little longer. Finally has cool has the bosses look there super easy, including the mother brain.
Still with these problems Super Metroid is still a great game, and the only game like this that comes close to it's glory is Castlevania Symphony of the night.
