Presto PowerPop makes PopCorn the Way you Love it!

Written: Jan 02 '03
Pros:Wonderful! Easy to Use, not messy, no moving parts!
Cons:None
The Bottom Line: We used to be too busy or too tired to even bother with Popcorn. After using Presto's PowerPop, we Pop to our hearts' delight!

Say, “Orville Redenbacher?” to anyone and, chances are, they’ll reply with “POPCORN!” So when I saw his signature on the Presto PowerPop™ lid, I was sold. Not that the word Presto isn’t enough to sell me on a product, but Orville’s made it doubly convincing, and at only $12.96 in Wal-Mart’s, what’s to lose?

I’m not really too much of a popcorn eater, until I get started, that is, and then I can’t seem to stop, despite the misery I feel in my mouth from the granules, the butter, the salt, and what have you!

My husband loves it! And I must admit, it’s neat to have a dish of it while watching a DVD movie or VHS picture. I’ve heard it said that buying popcorn in a theatre almost doubles the price you paid to get in, and I believe it.

We’ve had many different types of popcorn makers, none of them being anything to write home about. We’ve had the huge machine that has a little dish to melt the butter in and blows the popped corn into a pan or bowl that you’ve placed beside it. Too messy and takes up too much space. Really sort of a pain to use.

Then there are the popcorn bags you put into a microwave. The bags pop and are good sometimes and other times get burnt, and you think, “Oh, well! It’s cheaper than buying it at the theatre!” LOL

So when Christmas came around and I spied the Presto PowerPop™ Microwave Multipopper in Wal-Mart’s, I was ready!

Look out, honey, you’re about to get blessed!

The Presto PowerPop™ Microwave Multipopper

It’s a nice, sturdy plastic bowl, which is mounted on a black base and locked into place with a swivel motion. The bowl has a hanging flanged top for carrying and a flat removable lid with its handle embedded in the center. It’s actually a very simple unit, yet seems very sturdy and serviceable.

The secret to this popper is in, what Presto calls, the PowerCup® Concentrators. I think of them as filters of a sort. You see, the base of the bowl is smaller than the top of the bowl, graduating from 4.5 inches at the bottom to almost 14” at the top. The PowerCups® seem to be like sturdy cardboard and they are instrumental in making the popcorn pop quickly and thoroughly.

One Powercup® can be used about 24 times if you don’t use oil, or 12 times if you do. It’s up to you.

Using the Presto PowerPop™

It’s so simple that even I can do it, and that’s saying something. We prefer to doctor our popcorn AFTER making it, so I merely placed the PowerCup® in the bottom of the bowl. It has little teeth that hold it in place. Then I added 1/3 cup of yellow popcorn, put the lid on and placed the unit in the microwave.

My microwave is 650 watts with a revolving turntable. I turned it to high, and in 10 seconds heard my first pop and it took 3 minutes and 20 seconds to finish up the entire 3-quarts bowl.

The popcorn was light and fluffy, with only a few unpopped corns in the bottom of the dish, probably the corn wasn’t fresh. But the ones that were popped, were thoroughly popped and delicious.

It was a simple operation and I especially liked the fact that the bowl can be used for serving, too. When I removed the bowl, the carrying flange was NOT hot, neither was the handle on the lid. The base of the bowl was hot, though, which is understandable.

Conclusions

Along with a package of 8 PowerCups ®, The Presto Powerpop™ comes with a very comprehensive Instruction Book, which has all the cautions and warnings that are necessary for heat-created items. Be sure to read them, especially if you have children.

There are recipes in the book for fancy popcorn treats and suggestions for making your popcorn and a Question/Answer section. It tells us we can use yellow, white, baby rice and premium brands in the Popper.

I liked the fact that you can use oil or not use it and that you can butter and flavor it as you wish, when you wish. If we butter ours, we do place it in another bowl to save messing up the Powercup®. You merely wipe the cup with a damp rag and leave it in the Popper, ready for the next batch.

I went to Presto’s online site and ordered more packs of the PowerPops® - 8 to a package @1.58 per package. The shipping was only $1.32 and I felt it was worth it to not have to look for these in a store. I’m sorry, I should have checked it out for this Review, but I think it’s safe to say that these will be available in the stores where you purchase this unit.

My husband and I are sold on the Presto PowerPop™ Microwave Multi-popper and can, without reservations, recommend it to you! It’s great for couples or larger families.

It’s not messy, it’s fast, it does a terrific job, and it’s a lot cheaper than they sell in the Theatres! No wonder Orville Redenbacher put his name on this unit!

Have yourself a PowerPopping New Year!

Thanks for reading,

Lorace
