I bought my Sony CDRW because my daughter wanted a burner to record music Cds and I liked the idea of saving large data files that I could share between work and home. I did not want to spend a lot of money as our computer is old and when we upgrade the new unit will have a CDRW. The Sony 32/8/12 fit the bill. We felt the price was good and the speed would be fast enough for our applications.
This is an internal model. If you are afraid to take the cover off your PC you should look into getting an external model. There are several USB models out now that you could choose from. On the other hand, if you have ever upgraded your memory you can install this drive. You need to have an empty drive bay or be willing to give up your current CD-Rom. I wanted to keep my CD-Rom so I could copy disc-to-disc. Installation is a breeze and the instructions are good. You just screw the recorder into your empty bay and attach the IDE cable, power and sound. The software installs easily as well. No problems getting it in, up and running.
The software is Sony CD Extreme. I do not like it very much. It could just be me but it just seems like it is harder to use than it needs to be. If I use cheap CDR media I get a lot of buffer problems. This could be my computers fault. When I use good quality disks like Imation I have less problems. Some of the software did not work and what does is cumbersome.
My 14 year old daughter has no problem using the burner or software. She has burned hundreds of music Cds and loves to produce her own creations. The burner is fast. At 12x it does not take long at all to burn a 60 minute music CD. I'm sure that if I ever used a 48x I would think mine was slow. I have burned some music Cds and saved files for work and have been happy with the results. I like backing up my complete ''My Documents'' file and taking it back a forth between work and home.
At work I have a Phillips CDRW and use Nero software to burn Cds. Nero is much better than the Sony software.
