Surely This Deserved More Than Two Stars.... (Reply to this comment)
by sxepunk
I can admit that the Donna's possess a lack substance, or even a real knack for writing a song without an overdose of kitsch. But this album is a fun, if lyrically stale record. The fantastic solos and rhythm section have to give it three stars right away, try picking up a guitar and busting out a Donna's-esque solo, its more than tough.

Another thing that bothers me about this review is that if this record came 15 or 20 years ago in the hey day of free-loading, silly, female rock music in the vein of Cyndi Lauper, The Bangles, Madonna, or even Joan Jett and Half Cocked, I strongly believe you would have been dubbed as genius because the Donnas mirrored the same mentality of these artists with a WHOLE lot more skill, instrument wise.

However, since this album comes in an age of female musicians with brimming creativity and deep songwriting ability (i.e. Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, Alanis Morrisette, etc.), you feel the need to bash it as cheap and trite. A recording of musc should be judged in and of itself, not based on the period it was released in. At least thats what I believe. I do applaud you for writing a review posing an interesting theory though.

The Donnas aren't punk...such a misnomer, they're a female AC/DC, and in my eyes, a GOOD female AC/DC

i think u miss the point...
the Donnas r a Runaways\Joan Jett retro act, it suppose 2 sound trash, it suppose 2 have a rock&roll attitut that's not connected 2 anything and most of all the lyrics suppose 2 b dumb...thats the all point
it's just a fun rock&roll album and it dosen't inspire more, i don't like it 2 but it's the style ...in the end I think that the Donnas r really good in that their doing, they have a great act and thats the only thing that they want 2 have.

Thanks for the comment...errrr except for the stuff about Ms. Aguilera. Believe me, you'll never find that in my collection. A simple browse through my 200 other music reviews should show that as fact :)

Thanks again.

Nice review Shelly, =D. You know what bugs me about The Donnas? They all have Donna in their name. Donna A...Donna B...Donna number 1...Donna number 1-1/2. Yeah.

Oh, what kind of music are you really into? Seen you comment on alot of things, which is good, :)

Thanks for the comment. I think you too have missed the point of writing a review...and being a critic. But that's okay, it's your opinion and I respect any and all opinions.

With that said, I found great humor in this line:

"This album is meant to be rock 'n' roll, based on my understanding of your review, you seemed to expect some deep, soulsearching Creed-style musical stylings. "

Creed deep? Soul-searching? Um. No. Creed is sh*t. Sorry :) You've identified the wrong girl here.

:) It just gave me a chuckle.

I figure that they named themselves The Donnas as a punk statement. Otherwise, don't know. Thanks for the comment! Much appreciated!

I totally disagree on the writing reviews of things one likes only. part of being a "critic" is critiquing things, hence where the name came from ;)

Rocknpunkdad and Killabikini!

Now Lambchops, I respect your opinion, but as a Donnas fan I had to see what other fans had to say about your "review." So I linked it to the Donnas message board. Let's just say it got quite a response....

I like your review as it gave a lot of detail. You saying that the songs sound so alike is absolutely true. I've only heard about The Donnas for only a month or so. I heard about the gals when I was watching MTV and they recommended it. Right after that, I saw their music video "Take It Off" and I immediately got hooked.

I understand how you didn't really care for the CD "Spend the Night" and that's Okay. Everyone has their likes and dislikes about different genres of music. I wasn't a big rock fan myself but The Donnas really put that style to their advantage. They've really put rock to good use and I am proud to say that I own the CD and I'd like to get "The Donnas Turn 21". One thing though: I don't get why they called themselves the Donnas. None of them are named it. But heck with the group name, ROCK ON! :)

The Donnas rock hard on this album. (Reply to this comment)

This album is meant to be rock 'n' roll, based on my understanding of your review, you seemed to expect some deep, soulsearching Creed-style musical stylings.

If that's what you're searching for, then look elsewhere. However, if you like gritty, fun, exciting, feel-good rock 'n' roll made by a group of tough, honest, booze swilling lasses, then this is most definitely the album for you. You seem to expect qualities of a completely different genre for the Donnas, qualities that have never applied to their music. Your review comes across as unresearched through your misinterpretation of their genre as well as their mini discography that you did. You could have at least made the effort to get that right, you can even look it up on amazon.com! It's sad that potential fans may be misdirected simply by a review of an excellent rock 'n' roll album penned by someone that doesn't seem to understand the credo or spirit of rock 'n' roll in the slightest.

It's fantastic to have real rocker chicks around that break the mold of the pop princesses in the world and are up-front about their sexuality through their lyrics yet continue as talented young women who don't have to show off their bodies in order to gain attention or a fanbase. You have to listen to this album with a fun frame of mind. Otherwise, you simply won't get it.

First and foremost, thank you for the comment. I always am happy to get feedback on an opinion. I've taken you up on your expertise and updated the albums to begin with "The Donnas." Thank you for that.

Otherwise, I think you've mistaken the point of writing a review and being a "critic." I don't like this album, but we are all entitled to our own opinions...good and bad. And regarding punk, I'm not a massive fan but I do enjoy classic punk and 80's punk.

Again, thank you.

Sorry about the "not helpful" rating..... (Reply to this comment)
by samdavidowicz
....but I think that this review misses the entire point of the album. Spend the Night is meant as an pure, fun hard/punk rock album (much like their earlier efforts), nothing more.

---

Some things I had to comment on:

"Do The Donnas actually think that people will be at all challenged to think or even mildly fascinated by words like these..."

Well if you want thinking music put on some John Tesh......

Returning to issue of the lyrics, it should come as no shock that much of the album speaks directly about sex, drugs (and alcohol), and rock and roll. Wow.

What, did you expact Donna A. to sing about eating dinner with a nice boy then sitting in a car having soda? Come On! It's called ROCK N' ROLL for a reason, get used to it.

---

Then you say the band and the album is "flawed."
Well guess what, I found a flaw in your review:

As for the earlier albums, I cannot comment in depth nor will I investigate the band any further to find out. Four proceeded Spend The Night beginning with American Teenage Rock & Roll Machine in 1998 and wrapping three years later with The Donnas Turn 21.

The Donnas' discography actually began with the The Donnas, and even earlier when they released an album under the name The Electricutes, and they have a few singles as well. Maybe you should do a little more research before bashing a band.

---

Now, two things that I have trouble with:

The Donnas are modestly talented but have a hell of a lot growing to do before they deserve any kind of fan base.

Again, do you research. Spend the Night is Ranking high on several top ten lists, album sales are strong, and the Donnas do have a very strong base of loyal fans (and they aren't all males). You have A LOT of nerve saying that.

Spend The Night could have been better... it probably should have if The Donnas actually want to have any sort of continuing career.

Hmm, pundits said the same thing about the Ramones......

---

....it is better than Britney, Christina, and most all of usually absorbed pop music.

For once, we've actually agreed on something!

---

So, am I a fan? Yes. Do I think the Donnas are talented? More so than a lot of what's out there. Are they hot? Oh yeah (well except for the bass player - hope you like 'em chunky!). Am I male? Yes. Am I biased? No.

It's just silly when someone (who probably doesn't even like punk) decides to bash an album and then decides to say negative things about their success. Stick with reviewing the things that you like (you wouldn't see me writing epinions about cooking recipes, would you?).

Now I respect your opinion, but that's why i gave your review a NOT HELPFUL. Thanks for letting me vent.

... based on Take It Off I was all set to pick this disc up with the next batch of music. Now I think I might download a couple songs - if I run across some spare time - and that's a mighty big if. Thanks for the warning. :)
