Pros: More animals, buildings and more fun.
Cons: Hard at times to figure out. Keep the book handy for the first few days.
The Bottom Line: Try this expansion pack! If you enjoy Zoo Tycoon this will just increase the fun!

Zoo Tycoon has been a favorite game of mine for almost a year now. If I play a computer game Zoo Tycoon has been my game of choice. When my youngest son got Zoo Tycoon Marine Mania for Christmas this year, I have to say that I was probably more excited about it than he was. I was ready to add some great new animals to my zoo and also have the resources to create Sea World type shows at my zoo.
What You Get
The first thing I noticed about this expansion pack was that you get a lot more than animals and fences. You also get more foliage, animal toys, and even more control over the everyday occurrences in your zoo.
The Zoo Tycoon Marine Mania that my son received for Christmas also came with Dinosaur Digs. So not only did we get marine animals, but also prehistoric ones.
We now have dolphins, manatees, great white sharks, orca whales, sea otter just to name a few of the marine animals that come with this expansion pack. Of course, with new animals you need new building materials. Included with this expansion pack are the fences for building tanks and show exhibits for your marine animals. Also available for purchase are bleachers for your shows, toys for your animals, salt water and fresh water foliage for your tanks and filtration devices you will need to keep your marine animals happy. You also will notice that you now have not only zoo keepers, maintenance people and tour guides, but also you now will be able to hire marine specialist or scientist depending on what type of animal you are displaying in your zoo. You will be able to quickly learn what animals need which type of person to care for them.
As for the dinosaur part of this expansion pack, I really haven’t begun to even attempt to exhibit any of these animals yet. My sons have tried with little luck, because the dinosaurs keep escaping every time they are put into the exhibit. Since I am not a big fan of dinosaurs anyway I have left this part of the game alone. I do know that your dinosaurs are purchase as eggs and have to hatch. They also require special fencing and a scientist to take care of them.
More New Features
Not only are the animals new and different, but you also have access now to many different options that you didn’t in the regular Zoo Tycoon. My favorite new feature is being able to assign maintenance workers to a specific task such as emptying trash cans, sweeping and cleaning the zoo. This is the area that I had the most trouble with the original Zoo Tycoon, my maintenance workers seem to do a lot of walking around, but now they can be assigned to do certain things which helps to keep your zoo cleaner and your zoo fences repaired so that your animals don’t escape.
Also, you can now move your guest from one place in the zoo to another. You have always been able to move your maintenance men and zoo keepers, but when a guest got lost or seem to be walking around in the middle of nowhere there was nothing you could do, well with this expansion pack comes a way that you can now move your guest back to an area where they are visiting exhibits.
Zoo Tycoon Marine Mania also adds a few more themed buildings that you are able to purchase such as a tame dolphin ride, boat rental shack and a swim shack. You can purchase these and add them to your park and decide what to charge for these special features. Some of these will really help you to increase your zoo income as the guests really seem to enjoy them.
Another neat feature of this game is that you can now see at the click of a button how much money is being made by your food stands, composting facilities and other profitable buildings. All you have to do is click the Commerce Building List tab in the Zoo status window. Before this expansion you had to click on each individual building.
A few other things I have noticed that came with this expansion pack are different restaurants, bathrooms, drink and food stands along with small vendor stands that sell Frozen Ice Drinks, ice cream and other yummy treats that we all enjoy when visiting the zoo. You will also notice more fountains, trees, walkways, foliage and a few different decorations for your zoo.
My Thoughts
I have to say that I am very happy with what is offered for Zoo Tycoon when you add the Zoo Tycoon Marine Mania Expansion Pack. It has made the zoo more fun, given you many different ways to make more money, added some very unique animals and increased playing time now that you have all of these new animals and add-ons to play with.
