| tommy_lop's Full Review: Capcom vs SNK 2 for PlayStation 2 |
All right so who is the man Spiderman or Mega Man. After all Spiderman can do what ever a spider can, and Mega Man can do whatever a robot can (sorry just had to add that lame joke). Any way's I got this a couple of months ago for the PS2 after playing it in the arcades, with over 50 characters I figure it could last me a while. Well it isnt thee greatest fighting game in history, heck it's not the greatest Street fighter game Ive played, but it's still a great game.
Story.
OK first off there is no story, which really hurts the game. Now there's nothing worse then a fighting game getting to bogged down in story. However I would like to know who the characters are, why there fighting each other and what the hell that big black ball I have to beat up at the end has to do with anything. Its about a big a mystery has that giant hand at the end of super smash bros.
Graphics.
The graphics aren't going to push the PS2 to the limit, but there beautiful mix of both 2d and 3d art. The characters are done in hand drawn animations of themselves. The animation is smooth and it's nice to look at. Another thing I should not is Capcom makes sure that even though Marvel and Capcom come from two different sides of the planet and different universes that they look right fighting right next to each other. Even Jill Valentine which comes from the resident evil series looks right fighting the incredible hulk.
Next come's the 3d part which is for the backgrounds. No more animated backgrounds instead you have nice wonderful 3d backgrounds. There's very little polygons seen in these and they look great. They are put so good in the background that they don't stick out like a sore thumb sitting behind 2d animated characters.
Sound.
All right now there's a reason why they got a suggestive theme rating on this, no it isnt because the rogue kisses people for attacks, or Felissia's dress (meow), but because of the music. For a fighting game it just isnt hard core, the music sounds like something that should be played at a nightclub not a 3 on 3 smack down. Seriously when a fighting game ends with soft piano music then you know there's something wrong. It's a shame because the sound effects are great, from punches, to fire balls, and of course the sound of a mutant midget coming at you with steel claws are all put in here wonderfully.
Gameplay
The game is rather simple just like any other street fighter game or clones, knock the other person out by either beating on them, or throwing special moves on them. The game does have a few new twists, like in other vs game you fight in a tag team match. This time it's 3 on 3. The controls have also been change to cope with this, there is no medium punch anymore, rather this has been taking out for assist. By hitting the assist button one of the other 2 characters can be called out to perform a move.
There are also new additions to the special move bar that can let you perform the hyper combo's, now you can go up to 5, and all you need to unleash the big 100 hit combo's is get the bar up to 3 and hit the L1 and L2 buttons and watch the fire works. While this does make the game a little easier, it's needed to, the life bar on this is generous. You need the large amounts of combo's in order to get any life down quickly. This and the 3 on 3 battles make the battles endless, and this is good and bad.
The good is that it means you can spend more time beating on an opponent, bad is if you have a timer on then you'll never finish a match with a KO. To finish off 3 people on in 1 round even with a 99 second timer usually means you'll run out of time long before you reach a KO.
Charecters.
I do have to say that Capcom went all out in this one with over 50 characters to play with, and half of them have to be unlocked. The good news is unlocking is easy, after every game you play your awarded points in which you can go buy new characters, galleries, and different colors to. And while 50 characters is a lot all of them are different from each other (with the exception of the fact that there are two wolverines).
Even people with like moves like Charlie and Guile are different enough that you can't fight the same. In this example Guile is an over rated fighter (sorry Guile has never been a favorite of mine and never will be) who can unleash damage when called for it. Charlie on the other hand is an obsolete joke who is slow, moves don't pack any punch, and is basically a punching bag for an opponent.
For a short list of characters from the Marvel X-men comics you get Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Magneto, and from Spiderman there's Spidey himself plus the oversize sometimes evil friend of Spiderman Venom, and then to round it all of there's the incredible Hulk just to name a few.
From the Capcom side you get several Street fighter charecters, Ryu, Sakura, Ken, M. Bison, Guile, Chun li. Plus several other characters from the Mega Man series including the original Mega Man, Original Roll, Tron Bonne, and her loyal servbot. Of course the most interesting character of all is B.B. Hood a little red riding hood character that packs some serious heat.
The modes of Marvel VS capcom
First I'll get though the mode that will be used the least, the practice mode that lets you practice with new characters you unlock and help's you learn moves. You can still earn points to unlock characters here so it's not a total waste of time if you want to perfect a character.
Then there is arcade mode, this mode let's you set up stuff in the options mode like time and challenge, and let's you use unlimited continues to beat the game.
The next mode is Score Attack mode, unlike in the arcade mode which a really high score means you did pathetic, since the score doesnt go back to zero when you use a continue, a really high score means you lost a lot of matches. Score attack is opposite you have to use default time and challenge, and you don't have any continues. A high score and a beat game means you did accomplish something.
Then of course there is the VS mode where you and a human friend can compete against each other. Like in 95% of all fighting games it's the VS mode that will keep you coming back for more.
Presentation.
With all the characters what's the one thing that could kill the replay value, at least on one player mode, the presentation. The presentation takes a big hit when two things that have been taken out that should have been kept in. Remember the days of Street fighter 2 when the characters insulted each other after a fight so you wouldnt have to waste your breath insulting your friend are gone. Now when you win a fight all you get is a picture of your 3 characters standing around, which is incredibly lame.
Next thing is that there are no individual endings. The endings are all the same regardless of what team you have and what characters you use. It's just piano music followed by potrits of the first 24 characters you have, what you beat it using 3 unlockable characters too bad there still not going to be featured here.
Final recommendation
Still with the shortcomings of this game it's still addictive and is good for a short distraction on 1 player mode. It's the VS mode that will keep you coming back for more.
