Use Morningstar as a tool for your research, however there are better sites available for checking quotes and news on companies. Below is a list of helpful features you'll find on Morningstar's website:
Stock screener: You can screen stocks based a number of factors such as its EPS, dividend yield, and four unique ratings that you can only find on morningstar. It rates many stocks on a letter grade basis for growth, financial health, profitability, and valuation. These are very helpful ratings as they give you a quick feel for the corporation you're looking to buy, or maybe even sell. It's also great because you can search for firms that have A ratings in all categories, which will filter out all the firms which, numerically, don't meet the stringent A standards. The down side is that many new companies and all IPOs have no ratings for many of these categories due to their lack of information or history.
Who's buying/selling: You can see not only who owns stock within the corporation, when they've bought/sold and in what quantities, but you can also see what mutual funds buy that stock and the percentage of that funds portfolio which it comprises. Interested in knowing what Janus has bought or sold recently? Go to Morningstar and find out.
Intrinsic value calculator: Morningstar uses a mathematical model to figure out how much each share of stock is worth intrinsically. This is useful in determining whether a stock is over or undervalued and can especially helpful when calculating risk/reward ratios.
General financial information: Morningstar furnishes the most recent information on corporate debt, earnings, analyst growth expectations, news, and more. If it's numbers you're looking for, you'll find them at morningstar.
What's wrong with Morningstar: My biggest gripe about Morningstar is that it's a cumbersome website to maneuver around. It can often be confusing, and when you pull up quote information it's not in the easiest format to read. If you simply need a site to figure out stock quotes and the latest news I would discourage using Morningstar. Rather, this is definitely a site that should be reserved for all your research needs.
Overall, I recommend this site for both stock pros and newbies, but definitely not for the web amateur.
