The Bottom Line Wining and Dining at it's FINEST!!
I wanted to do something very special for Mike this past weekend to celebrate his birthday, so I planned an evening with our two best friends in The Windy City. If I'm going to put the effort into doing something, I strive to do it RIGHT, so not just any place would do. I selected The Signature Room on the 95th floor of The John Hancock Building to entertain my special guests. It came highly recommended by several Chicago natives, so I knew it was exactly what I was looking for ambiance wise. I tell you, we just arrived home a little while ago, and I am still reeling from the experience!! The entire restaurant is glass, and every table allows you to see the city of Chicago.......there isn't a bad table. It is the most beautiful view that I have ever seen in all of my travels. What could be better than sitting amongst the stars (literally), a view of the beautiful Gold Coast, my husband and good friends? I can't think of anything.....it is truly a breathtaking experience. I am not kidding you when I say there isn't a place in the restaurant without that same incredible view-----you even get it in the ladies room!! Okay, I'll get to the meal, but romance tends to carry me away!! Our dinner reservations were at 7:00, and we were given a beeper and proceeded to wait in the cocktail lounge. We learned that it is a very busy place for cocktails---IF you can afford them!! We had four drinks for the tune of $35.00. I can understand this because the staff was determined to find out right off the bat if you were there for dinner or "just drinks". Granted, it is a tourist attraction, they want to maintain the sophistication and elegance of an exclusive restaurant. If you have dinner reservations, you are treated like royalty, just passing through to get a glimpse of the view---they can do without you. The little things always get my attention, for example, when we were being taken to our table, the gentleman seating us insisted on carrying my drink and we were addressed by our name each time they came to the table. The menu basically is straight across the board American cusine. The birthday boy chose a filet mignon that looked delightful. Our friends had the salmon and New York Strip, which was equally impressive. I went with the fetticine with asparagus, sundried tomatoes and capers. The salad selection consists of Caesar or Mixed Greens, I had the Caesar and absolutely loved it!! It was covered with huge slivers of fresh parmesean cheese. The anchovy toast was a nice added touch. The side orders are optional and consist of mashed potatoes, asparagus, or sauteed mushrooms. We sampled all three and were very impressed with the presentation. The mashed potatoes are obviously prepared by the pastry chef, and the asparagus and mushrooms are served in their own baking dish. The portions are very substantial, you won't be disappointed here. I must have been in awe of the view, the wine list passed me by, but Mike and our waiter selected a Sterling Merlot that went perfectly with everyones entrees. That was another "little thing" that I just happened to notice, our waiter was a life-long professional waiter. He KNEW his business, and didn't have to think about what wine we needed to compliment our selections. He and his assistants left us wanting for nothing throughout the entire experience. The pricing was basically fair when you add in the overall experience. Like I mentioned earlier, the drinks are high in the lounge. The entree's, I thought were pretty reasonable, $25.00-30.00. They "get you" with the salad and side orders being extra. The salads were $8.00, as well as your side order.........I can deal with the salad being extra, but I thought it was taking it a bit far with the sides. I'm not complaining at all, it was well worth it. The bottle of wine was $28.00, which was actually cheaper than I thought it would be. (Of course it is about a $15.00 bottle of wine) Overall, the experience was magnificent. It is the kind of place that you will never forget, so if you want a romantic and dreamy atmosphere, look no further, BECAUSE YOU HAVE ARRIVED!! |
