When our grandson was only a few months old, our daughter-in-law asked us to tape record ourselves reading story books. We live over 1,00 miles away and she wanted her son to remember our voices when we were not there. One book we chose was "Goodnight Moon."
A year and a half later this book has become one of our grandson's favorites. It did not surprise us that one of his first spoken words was "moon." Did having this story read to him hundreds of times by his parents, us and others make him say this words so soon? I can't say for sure. But, I like to think it did.
I think Goodnight Moon is a perfect bedtime storybook to buy for young children. It appeals to both boys and girls. There is nothing scary in it. Children are attracted to the colorful pages. They love to point to the familiar objects on the page. Children love all the rhyming words and the simple phrases. The story is short enough to hold a toddler's attention.
The book is sturdy enough in the Board edition for toddlers to hold and "read" to themselves. It is seventeen pages short and the best thing is that the child can be rough with the book and it still holds up fine.
Goodnight Moon is a simple story of a little adorable rabbit dressed in his pajamas who is getting ready to fall asleep. First he must say goodnight to everything in his room. (As a child, I remember asking my father to say goodnight to each one of my dolls by name before I went to sleep.) The sleepy rabbit's room looks like a child's room colorfully decorated in a bright green color "great green room" with toys on a shelf and pictures on the wall. There is a fireplace, a brush, his chair, a bowl of "mush," an older rabbit who says "hush." The book shows lots of things familiar to a young child like a telephone, a red balloon, a toy house, a little mouse. The author brings in elements from popular nursery rhymes like kittens, mittens and a cow jumping over the moon. As the rabbit get sleepier the illustrations become slightly darker.
One of the most important things parents can do to get their child ready for school is to read a favorite story over and over again. The simple repetitive language helps children memorize the words. This is a first step toward reading. Reading to a child helps instill in the child a love of reading that is so important for success in school. Every educator I know stresses the importance of reading in future academic success.
Reading to a child also helps create a close bond between the parent and the child. It gives the child a sense of security; he has the full attention of the parent. When a parent reads to a child they are close together sharing a very special time. Reading is a nurturing way to say to the child you are important to me. Children as young as 6 months enjoy hearing a story. A bedtime ritual of story time helps the child slow down from the activities of the day. After a warm bath, a calming bedtime story quiets the child and helps prepare the child for sleep.
Goodnight Moon speaks volumes to children. This book has been around for a long, long time and has become a children's classic. That alone tells the power of this simple book.
