OfficeMax.com delivers accurately and on time

I was pleasantly surprised this morning when I looked out the window after the doorbell rang and the OfficeMax truck was parked at the end of my driveway. I had ordered two cases of paper and two boxes of envelopes for our home business last Tuesday. The order arrived exactly as promised with no delivery charge.

The OfficeMax website, http://www.officemax.com, has a wide variety of office supplies available. The primary categories are Supplies, Furniture, Technology, CopyMax, Business Services, and Specialty Shops. You can search online, find a product using an order number from their catalog (which you can also request online for free), or browse through the category listings. Product listings generally include a photo, a description, unit, delivery time, and price. By entering the quantity desired and clicking add to cart, the item is added to your shopping cart.
You can browse the website without creating an account, but you will create an account on the website if you place an order. Account registration only includes entering your first name, last name, email address, a user ID, password, reminder questions and answer, selecting whether you want Autologin enable, and choosing whether or not to opt-in to their newsletter. Having an account gives you access to online order tracking.
Ordering
Office Max prices are not always the lowest, however, combined with free shipping on orders over $50, the total price delivered is very competitive. On my latest order, I started ordering from Amazon.com, which is affiliated with Office Depot, but canceled my order with Amazon.com when I found that they wanted $50 in shipping charges for a $100 order. OfficeMax also offers a limited 115% Low Price Guarantee. (See the Help section of the website for complete details.) Visit the Office Max website regularly and read their emails to find many online discounts and special offers.
The first screen of the shopping cart allows you to update quantities, delete items, and enter promotional codes, if applicable. To begin checkout, you must login to your existing account or create a new one. If you have made a previous purchase, your payment and shipping information is automatically entered, but can be edited at the Review screen. Credit cards and terms include Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, OfficeMax and DirectMax Plus. Immediately after submitting my order, I received a confirmation email listing the full details of my order, including the delivery date. Phone ordering is available at 800-283-7674.
Most items are delivered next business day from a local OfficeMax, unless you choose in store pick up. On the order form, you can request a specific delivery date and leave instructions for the Delivery Agent. You must sign for the delivery unless you leave a Delivery Release Note, which is available in the Help section, for the Delivery Agent. See the OfficeMax website for complete delivery terms, especially if you are not using the free delivery option. My items were delivered on time and in excellent condition.
Bottom Line
OfficeMax.com exceeded my expectations. The website was easy to use and the items were delivered on time in perfect condition with no need to contact OfficeMax, other than to submit my order online. I highly recommend using OfficeMax.com to meet your office supply needs.
Update 1/15/2003 - Technical & Customer Service Issues Encountered
Last night I tried to place another order with OfficeMax.com. This time there was a technical problem with the website. The order appears in my order history, but the details are not available, making the order invalid. On the bright side, OfficeMax did answer the phone at 11 PM. However, the response I received was not very helpful. First, they told me to call back 30 to 45 minutes later because the order takes that long to propagate through the system. I called back 2 hours later at 1 AM. The problem was still there and they could not pull up my order. I asked if there was technical support available to fix the issue and I was told that there wasn't. I then asked the representative to report the issue and they said that they didn't have anyone to report it to. The only option was to simply leave it and it should be cleaned up automatically in a week. I'm not satisfied with this response. It took me half an hour to put together the order, which was lost, and I spent another half an hour on the phone trying to resolve the issue. When I emailed the problem to Customer Service, I did receive a response within 24 hours. However, the corrupt order is still in my Order History. I am not as inclined to shop at a website that has no resolution path for technical problems. I have downgraded my Customer Service rating to Average and my overall rating of OfficeMax.com to Above Average.
