Re: Customers I spoke to in lobby weren't so pleased with WMU mortgage (Reply to this comment)
by Joubert, in Personal Finance
I know you don't mean to sound offensive, but rest assured that prior to my refi, I had never even been in contact with Washington Mutual at any point in my life.
The neat thing about consumer opinions is that most companies do well and do poorly. By taking as many data samples as you can, you learn where a company fits in the overall scheme of things.
My experience was great. That is part of the reason why I wrote this Epinion. The company I have been at for seven years is also listed on Epinions, but I do not even rate their reviews, nor have I obviously written one.
I do not think you meant to question my integrity, but it sure feels that way from where I sit. I know you're relatively new here, but I think a certain etiquette would demand that before you make a baseless charge that you first look into the matter.
George
P.S. I rated your Epinion on WaMu before you rated this. Would I have given you a very helpful if I worked there, especially as an Advisor in the Personal Finance area? Think about it.

Customers I spoke to in lobby weren't so pleased with WMU mortgage (Reply to this comment)
by relyon
While waiting in the WMU lobby for 3 1/2 hours for a supervisor to tell me why my checking account had a hold placed on it for the third time in less than two months even though it was in good standing (See Froze 3 Time by Mistake review), I had the opportunity to chat with a few WMU customers who were having difficulty with thie mortgage process. One was there for the 3rd time because WMU had still not gotten the paperwork together and was told to come back again, two others basically reported the the WMU was just one big headache. What I saw was more frowns than smiles...........
This particular review I'm commenting on seems to have been written as a plug by a WMU rep to me, but that;s just my opinion

Connie - Glad to hear that you've had a good experience with them. After they grew so big, I'm more accustomed to seeing only the negative reviews about them, but they must be doing something right. It's that old business axiom, "Customers rarely tell you when you're doing well." Okay, Epinions helps that, but you know what I mean.
Rex - One day, we'll figure out a system to stop closing tables surprises. You had a pleasant one, but I've heard enough scary ones. We started to go BofA, where we have primary checking, but this deal fell into our laps at the same rate and closed a month or six weeks earlier. Wasn't a hard choice.
Nick - Thanks for the nice words. I can't imagine a lower rate so refi without points is probably out for a while for us. That said, I can see moving in 3-5 years and they're at the top of our list to contact.
Arthur - You are, of course, correct about not technically needing the 1098. And even though I file electronically, I like to have all my little supporting pieces of paper arrayed around the computer when I start! Surprisingly, WaMu did catch the December payment. Wasn't a lot, as expected, but every little bit helps the itemizing.
Pamela - Ack. I've been waiting to hear. Did it end up working out okay for you? Or did you scorch 'em a little with a fiery blast and move on?
Thanks, all, for reading and especially for commenting. That's the real payoff for me, and I appreciate each of you taking the time to share your thoughts.

Arghhhh! (Reply to this comment)

It just so happens that we have an existing mortgage with WaMu on a rental property and now want to refinance our primary residence. After reading your review I decided it was a good idea to go with the folks who know us so well already instead of starting out new with strangers.
So far, our experience with the WaMu website and customer service is so far below expectations that they would need a ladder just to get up to crummy! I have been unable to reach a live person on any of their phone numbers and the website will only allow me to log in to our existing loan. My husband, who is in Bahrain just now, can't even get into our existing loan! I fail to grasp the logic of having two different sets of log in information for the existing loan and our Application Notebook.
I plan to give them a bit more time as tomorrow is a bank holiday, but if I can't get something working soon it will be another bank that gets our business.

You, know, technically... (Reply to this comment)

you don't need the 1098 to deduct the interest.
In fact, in some cases, you should deduct a different amount than on the 1098, not only because of exclusions or non-deductible mortgage interest, but because you deduct the interest paid by payment you made (or they received -- it's not entirely clear to me) during the year, and they base the 1098 on interest they credited you with paying during the year. If, by chance, they receive a payment on December 31, it's likely not to be included on the 1098 -- but it should be.
However, that's only a minor point, and it certainly helps to have the 1098 to work from.

Just refinanced... (Reply to this comment)
by scmrak
last week, with a full 2% drop in rate (from 7.5 to 5.5) -- we stayed with the bank that held our old mortgage and were astonished at closing to see that they'd waived a slew of fees. The outlay we'd been expecting to be close to $8K at closing turned out to be about $2500 less. What a pleasant surprise!
Oddly enough, we switched from a 30-yr fixed to a 15-year fixed, and our monthly payment (PITI) increased a whopping six dollars.
Nice job on Washington Mutual, but - believe it or not - we're stickin' with the BOA people.

Used them for YEARS! (Reply to this comment)
by briandalsmom
Live in Seattle and not use WMU? Unthinkable! We've been with them for 18 years--just before we bought our house. Our first loan was with them and every refinance since has been as well. Not that we didn't shop around each time!
Both my husband and I belong to large credit unions and each time we wanted to lower our rate WMU came up with the best offer.
Great customer service and flawless for 18 years...so far!
Thanks for the great review!
