What's a straight gal doing reviewing a gay man's magazine? Because...I really like this magazine. Here's the story.
Those of you who know me well enough know that the closest friends I have are gay men. It's sad but true. It's sad because they are all incredibly hot. It's true and has been this way since eighth grade.
One of my friends, David, subscribes to almost every single gay magazine on the market. I have often questioned the logic to this because I wonder if after awhile, you just get tired of seeing so much dick in pictures. He assures me that this could never be the case. Don't worry, I've never gone down the avenue that all dick looks alike either. I know the scoop on that one.
Unzipped happens to be one of the many magazines that he subscribes to. Being the most excellent friend that he is, he shares the wealth, allowing me to oogle the most gorgeous men of the month.
Logistical Information About Unzipped Unzipped is a monthly magazine that carries a high price tag. I've never seen it in the usual places that I find magazines (i.e bookstores). Of course this is Indiana and lots of people here can't even pronounce homosexual. If you happen to find it in a store, the cover price is $6.99. David receives his magazine every month, for 12 months, for the costly sum of $39.95 per year. Since I have had to pick up David's mail before, I know that Unzipped is delivered in an envelope so as not to disturb your homophobic neighbors.
The magazine is approximately 75-90 pages per month. You'll find about 1/4 of that is advertising. The ads you can expect include a spectrum of gay oriented material - movies, toy, lubricants, books, and games.
The Scoop Unzipped is like an Entertainment Weekly for gay men and I mean that in a broad sort of way (not the entertainment sort of way). Unzipped's only real focus is on celebrating gay male sex and sexuality.
In every issue you can expect lots of pictures :), interviews and porn reviews, health, fitness, humor, entertainment, and subjects about the moment.
I find that every issue is chockful of new and interesting things for me. With David, it's probably new only about 1/3 of the time.
Now let me give you some examples of why this straight chick loves this magazine.
First, the male models are sexy, yet tasteful. Many gay magazines I've seen show men who are just too pretty. I like pretty boys as much as the next chick however, I like them rough and tough too. The male models featured come in all shapes, sizes (though mostly HUGE), and colors. Some of the best looking men featured in Unzipped happen to be black (and well hung).
Second, the magazine isn't afraid to show pictures that are factual. Alright, I can't claim to be an expert in watching two or more guys go at it, David and I (and other gay friends) have talked long enough for me to understand what does and doesn't occur. I look at the pictures and think - how cute, sweet, hot, WOW! those men are.
Third, I actually read the articles from front to back. I learn a lot. Who better to know how to please a man, then another man? Sure, some men may not be into backdoor action however, all men enjoy a good dose of oral sex. It's not like we women go to school for this stuff. Any hints and tips we can learn from other men (who do the same stuff), is a bonus for our man.
I remember in the July 2002 issue, I learned a lot about lubrication, starting with the history of what men used to use (i.e. spit, vaseline, pre-cum, Crisco and cold cream). I mean, I knew about some of these - but definitely not the cold cream/Crisco combination. You know Crisco stains, right?
Getting up close and personal with a cock ring was a new experience for me. I mean up close and personal in Unzipped people. Not only was it a most delicious picture (David and I both agree on this) but the author of the feature gave us ways in which a cock ring can best be used. He also gives us some helpful dont's which is pretty important when you consider the equipment.
The last article I'll mention before moving on is the one that featured this guy who had silicone injected in his penis and scrotum area. People, I'm not lying. His name is Marko and he started out at 4.5 inches and shot up to 8 inches (scrotum now measures 12). The pictures were bizarre. Personally, I wasn't turned on by them however David says that men that are into fantasy castration might get a kick out of it.
Fourth, if you have any interest in gay videos, Unzipped provides a nice review about the new releases. They provide a short plot summary, running time, cast, director, what the best scene is, why you'll want to watch (or not watch), and if the video is worth a buy, rent, or sell.
