Kitchen Utensils/Gadgets are my Life!Feb 14 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line No kitchen is complete without some little gadgets to make your life easier! I guess Epinions is digging the bottom of the barrel for topics. However, since my kitchen contains tons of gadgets, I'm going to list some of my favorites here, and tell a little about them. Egg Separator: I know, I've seen so many people do this without a gadget on TV, but hey, I'm not that coordinated. I use this small Tupperware separator that I've had for years. It has a little edge that helps it fit over the lip of a small bowl. The whites go into the bowl, and the yolk is separated, then I pour it into another bowl. It's fast, easy, and the yolk very rarely breaks. It's a good thing. Fine Strainer: I've had flour sifters for years, too. They are hard to clean, and tend to get gummed up after a few years. I finally got a fine strainer, and use it to sift my flower, as well as drain vegetables, strain soups and sauces, etc. It cost me $4.50 at a restaurant supply store, and is one of my new favorite things. Sifts so much easier, pops in the dishwasher, and comes out CLEAN. Say goodbye to the flour sifters. Small Ice Cream Scoop: Again, I'd wanted one of these for a long time, and finally got one at the restaurant supply store. It's small, just large enough to scoop cookie dough, melons, etc. It's a real time-saver when making cookies, and they come out more uniform, too. Pastry Blender: I've had mine since I learned to make biscuits in HomeEc in high school. (Yes, that's a long time.) You can use two knives to blend the dough, but a pastry blender is easier, and they last forever -- mine is proof of that. They are easy to clean, and pop in the dishwasher, too. Doughnut Cutter: How else do you get the hole in the middle? I must confess, I haven't made doughnuts with this. It was handed down to me from my grandmother. It's just the right size for making wonderful biscuits, if you remove the center cutter, and just use the outside. I keep it as much for its sentimental value as its value in the kitchen. Wooden Spoons: Couldn't cook without them, I use them just about every day, and they also pop in the dishwasher. What house is without a wooden spoon or two? Rubber Spatulas: Can't be without these, either. I have several sizes for scraping down mixing bowls during mixing. They won't shred if they get caught in the blades, and are also easy to clean. Corn Holders: They are cheap, and invaluable if you don't want to burn your fingers on hot corn on the cob. I buy sets when they are on sale, which usually cost less than $1. Since they can break or get lost, I almost always have a spare package lying around, just in case. They are easy to insert in the ends of the corn. They have sharp edges, since we don't have kids, that's not a problem in our house, but it might be in yours. Well, those are a few of my favorite kitchen gadgets. I'm sure I'll come up with more to add. Every kitchen has their own favorite tools. If you're adding to yours, I hope this helps you a little bit! |
