I was very pleased with my experiences at CD Universe, an online music/movie store that sells some hard-to-find items. I was searching for two specific Christmas-related CDs early in the Christmas season, although I wasn't feeling confident. Searches at Amazon.com turned up nothing on the two objects in question: a copy of a Bing Crosby Christmas album that included "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and a copy of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir album "Christmas Carols Around the World". I kept up my search anyway, and finally located not one, but both at CD Universe.
I was wary of trying out a new online store, but the price for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir CD was only $6.29! That is unbelievably low for a new CD, especially one that I absolutely could find nowhere else (not even a mention of it). The other CD cost only $9.59, also an extremely good price. I made my order on Dec. 3, 2002.
On Dec. 6th, I got an email saying that the Bing Crosby CD had shipped and that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir CD was backordered. The email contained all the information that I needed: an email address for questions, a description of what the term "backorder" means and how long I could expect to wait for the CD in question. I received weekly emails from CD Universe that related to me the status of my order, which I thought was a nice gesture.
Christmas drew closer, and I sent an email to CD Universe to ask about the status of the CD and whether I could hope that it would arrive before the holiday. I sent an email to CD Universe to ask if this was a possiblity and I received a very nice letter in return that apologized for the backorder but let me know that it was not possible. I was slightly disappointed, but since the CD was unavailable anywhere else (especially for such a low price) I didn't worry about it.
Weekly emails continued to arrive. The webpage told me that 45 days after the original order was made, the order would be cancelled if the item had not arrived. However, on Jan. 15, 2003, I received an email that told me that the item had actually shipped! I was so surprised! I was even more surprised to go home that very evening and find the item already waiting in my mailbox.
While my items were backordered, I felt that my experience with CD Universe was extremely pleasant. Their prices were very low, and their commitment to customer service was evident. Their shipping was fast and of good quality, and I received exactly the items that I ordered. I was very happy with my purchases, and I plan to shop with CD Universe again, especially for hard-to-find items.
