Zone Alarm Pro 2 & Norton System Works (Reply to this comment)
by jdoit
Thanks for the great article! You have convinced me that I need ZAP2. Are there any known conflicts with Norton System Works for Windows XP and any of the ZA products? I am also considering buying ZA Ghost. Any problems there?

I used to run the shareware ZA version with McAfee and then with Norton on Win98 but had to remove it because of crashes. I suspected they were the fault of McAfee or Norton (or me!)but considered them to be more important to have on my system.

Thanks Moose.

One of the problems with any program that needs access to the internet is that you have to allow access for the primary function to work. Personally, I don't have KaZaa, and would recommend you read articles about the RIAA winning a court order forcing Verizon to turn over the name of someone who downloaded 600 songs in one day before deciding what to do next. Since I have never run KaZaa on any machine I own, I can't tell you if the spyware runs under the same application as the P2P network. However, I do know that if I were inclined to participate in a P2P network, I would do a search on "KaZaa Lite" and run that instead. KaZaa Lite offers all of the functionality of KaZaa except for the spyware. But again, before going that route, read what is going on. It isn't hard to monitor what people are doing over P2P networks. This Verizon case is a test case. As long as another court doesn't overturn the decision, you will find subpoenas for similar activities becoming relatively common.

"Why should I buy the "Pro" version"

Network protection is also worth mentioning. I purchased the Pro version a year or so ago, because I was using a shared internet connection and with the Pro version installed on my "internet" computer, it protected all the PC's on my home network that accessed the internet through that computer.

thanks Steve -- I had downloaded Zone Alarm Pro trial version and not Zone Alarm free version -- I see that ZA is still free, although the features I needed were in the Pro version, which you eventually have to pay for. Again, the product is well worth it. -- On another note for other Epinionators -- Steve, Lorace and I are enjoying 76 degree weather right now - come on over!! :-)

Jennifer, I believe you are mistaken. When I first started using ZoneAlarm, I used the free version. It did not expire. Looking at www.zonelabs.com , it appears that the freeware version is still free for non-commercial use. In any event, as the title of the review states, this is shareware that is worth paying for. By spending a few dollars, a good product can continue to improve as new vulnerabilities arise.

I love Zone Alarm -- I downloaded the shareware program -- it does expire, and you do have to pay for it eventually, but at least you get an opportunity to try it out.

Thanks Suzanne, feel free to ask any questions you may have. I have been working as a software developer for the past 18 years, and am very informed about things in this area.

While your review has been very helpful to me, it has made me aware of how "unprotected" I am. I never realized how naive I was. Thanks for the great information!
