Pros: Storage size, OS upgradeablity, user community, ease of use, overall quality & heavy duty construction.
Cons: This unit (literally) smells. Not a joke! It has an unpleasant odor. BYO headphones.
The Bottom Line: It's not cheap, but you get what you pay for. A quality instrument that should serve you well.

| felix2k's Full Review: Archos Jukebox Recorder 20GB MP3 Player |
I've replaced an older (slightly) MP3 player with this unit, and although my PDA can also play MP3s it doesn't have the volume or sound quality that the Archos provides & I really want to have a more robust music player. So while it has taken the place of providing me with portable music, the MP3 feature was actually something of a bonus, as I had originally gone looking for portable high volume data storage.
This device plugs right into Windows 2000 and doesn't even require a driver install - Windows just recognizes it, and you're ready to go -- treating it like another drive on your PC. (Windows 98SE did require driver installation from the included CD). Plugging the unit into a SuSE Linux (8.1 pro) box resulted in the *immediate* appearance of an icon for the drive on the desktop, which was mounted and transferring files in seconds. Truly the easiest install of the 3 OSs I've attached it to so far. (Unix users will love it for that :)
The best part, is of course the open source OS support, which I have not even had a chance to avail myself of yet! (See other reviews on this product for someone who has).
Some other reviews here have complained about the interface on (older?) similar Archos units, but this one's default interface is intuitive and simple to use, which accounts for why I haven't skipped over to download the alternative open source OS -- it really isn't necessary
For upgradeability and features including ease of use and versatility, this is a great investment that may just replace lots of other "gadgets" currently cluttering your pockets. (I've got to go now and list some of mine for sale on Ebay.. ;)
p.s. - I suppose I ought to comment on the odor remark. It's not a joke -- it does have a strong odor..like uncured plastic precursors or something. It does seem to be fading, but the first days I used this device, it was distractingly strong and unpleasant. Not the sort of thing that should really influence a purchase decision! Just something that I took notice of.
