NAVMAN GPS 3420 for IPAQ has problems

Written: Jan 25 '03
Pros:Shipment is fast.
Cons:Technical Support, Slow to locate GPS satellite, new software version has errors.
The Bottom Line: Save your self the headache of getting this unit to even work. Even if you get it to work, it takes way to long to locate the GPS satellites.

After receiving the NAVMAN GPS 3420 I loaded and registered the software. Everything about this process is extremely slow. After getting the software and maps loaded, I had to leave the unit outside more than an hour before it showed signals from a GPS satellite. After seeing that it appeared to work, I decided to go online and download the latest version “V.1.90.1007” of the Navman SmartST software. After upgrading to this version of software the unit would give an error that the software needed at least 6MB of program memory. My IPAQ had 20+ MB of free program memory. The only way I could get the Navman SmartST program to start was by removing the NAVMAN GPS sleeve, starting the program, and then reinserting the sleeve after the program was running. Again it would take more than an hour to locate a satellite both times that I could get it to find them. However it would not show any maps. Since the new version brought many problems, I uninstalled everything and reloaded the originally shipped software. After doing this, when I tried to run the software it would give an error saying it could not locate the SmartST program file. The file was in the correct spot, but it never worked since. I contacted NAVMAN and explained the problem, the replied with a solution that said if I hadn’t upgraded to “V.1.90.1007” to do so. I could tell they did not fully read my problems because I clearly stated that my problems began when I upgraded. The next solution to try was to be sure no maps were loaded on the IPAQ’s 64MB memory. Again they did not read my problem, because I clearly stated that I had 20+MB program memory free on the IPAQ’s 64MB. It has been 2 weeks since this problem was reported and it hasn’t been resolved. I plan to return the unit.
