Pros: Light-weight, good battery life, very quiet, solid construction, serial port.
Cons: Only one PCMCIA slot.
The Bottom Line: Lots of computing power in a very small package and rugged enough to withstand harsh treatment. A lighter, cooler, quieter brother to the C600 but just as capable.

| bucky_maruki's Full Review: Dell Latitude C400 Notebook |
I have had Dell laptops for many years now, using them outdoors in some pretty dusty environments (construction sites) and indoors without docking stations or separate keyboards/monitors, writing software day-in day-out. My favorite until recently was the superb C600, but in a quest for something very light and airplane-friendly I searched for a replacement. The C400 was almost the only ultralight with a DB9 serial port which for me was a must-have, and after reading several favorable reviews I went for it.
Compared to the C600 this thing is super-quiet. I have the 40GB hard-drive so perhaps this is quieter than the other smaller disk drives. My C600 had a P750 whereas the C400 has a 1.2GHz and even with the faster CPU is a lot cooler running than the C600. The battery (6 cell) lasts me about 2.5 hours but beware the optimistic battery-monitor estimate of time remaining. The AC adapter is smaller also and came with a little 90 degree AC plug thingy that eliminates the need for carrying the AC cord - the less the merrier.
After about 6 months of continual use and one drop test this machine is still working flawlessly. I will continue to buy Dell, dude, for as long as they make sweet computers like this one.
