| jpd480's Full Review: RCA 40" Scenium HDTV TV-DVD Player D40W135D Standa... |
After thoroughly researching HDTV options, I chose the RCA Scenium 40" projection model with DVD (model D40W135D). There are so many issues and features with HDTV that I was getting overwhelmed deciding the best choice. I wanted a TV that would have all the features needed to support the inevitable growth of HDTV, and the RCA delivers. I did not have a lot of space and did not own a DVD player, so the RCA was at the top of my list for these categories. While some TVs have a smaller footprint, they are typically much more expensive, don't include a DVD, or don't have a DVI. The RCA has a great sound system, and all I had to do was add a powered subwoofer (hidden behind the unit) which provides great sound without the extra cost and unsightliness of a surround system. I thought the high contrast shield may create too much glare, but it is not bad, and most sets have the high constrast shields anyway. I do like the floating black border around the picture as well. The menus and remote are intuitive, and the picture from the DVD player seems to be of high quality. I have basic cable connected via coax (the lowest quality source), and the picture still is very good due to I assume the high-end circuity and algorithms that the Scenium line contains. I saw how much better an HD signal looks in the showroom, so it can only get better.
I was concerned about the quality reputation of RCA, but supposedly they took extra pains to provide a high quality product in their Scenium line. Besides, I read horror stories about other supposedly quality brands as well, and I had a Honda automobile that had lots of problems, too. To play it safe, I got an extended 5 year warranty for $170. This model came out less than a year ago and listed for $2100. I got a close-out floor model for $1300, so it made the decision easier. If you have the money, get the Samsung 42" DLP for $3500. I also looked at the 42" Samsung projection for about $1500, but it didn't have a DVD or DVI, but I liked it's low glare screen. The 46" Sony has DVI and a free stand but no DVD for $1900 as well. The only problem I can find with the RCA is that the DVD menu is slightly blurry in the lower left hand corner of the screen. The DVD and cable picture is great, so this just may be a quirk that I can live with. I am not sure if this model is being discontinued due to poor sales. Apparently some people don't like the cosmetic appearance of the set or figure for a few hundred more than can get a larger size projection HDTV. However, RCA said they have not continued this model, and I believe Circuit City carries it, but this review may be a moot point if your can't find this model to buy anywhere!
