Paper Handling:
Pros:Price, print quality
Cons:It continually jams when printing envelopes.
The Bottom Line: If you don't need envelope printing, it's a heck of a good value. But who doesn't need to do envelopes from time to time? There's gotta be a better way.
I gave up on my old HP6M and bought this for about $160 new, figuring it'd cost at least that much to fix the old HP, which had given me years of uncomplaining service prior to a problem with a rear feed wheel that caused jamming.
So I got a Brother 1440. Installation and software went fine. Setup - a cinch. Tests on 8.5 x 11 were excellent - the great resolution you'd expect of a laser, along with laser speed.
If all I were going to try to print was letter-size jobs from the big paper try, no problem.
Unfortunately, life is not like that.
My first big job turned out to be my long overdue Christmas card envelopes.
1. I had to feed them in singly, instead of being able to make a stack of 4 or 6, as I had with the HP.
2. About every 3rd or 4th envelope would jam. So, open the hatch, remove the cartridge. Look and find nothing amiss. Replace cartridge. Close hatch. Power cycle to clear the jam light.
3. Three or four envelopes later, another jam alarm, still without any physical jamming.
I'm getting tired of this -- I'm about 25 envelopes into my list and it's holding me up. I mean, the Christmas card is already a Valentine's Day card -- I don't need this!
