Neither Play or Collect Barbie for Investment (Reply to this comment)
by candidcanine
I am taking the minority position and I speak from my very being on this issue. Having studied the ancients and primitive cultures extensively in college I have come in late life to attach a living presence with Barbie dolls. So you see, I neither collect for future profit or play with Barbie. I live with her and all her manifestations and she wields a power over me to discover more about her. I keep my collection(little over 70 now) in the box and I do this to ward off the dust that would come from not playing with her. I have paid as much as 300.00 dollars for a Barbie collectible (Barbie and Ken as the Munsters) and as much or more for the Coke fountain and all the Mattel Coke characters. I guess many would call me the fool and that is why I save this last tid-bit for you to ponder. I have reached such a bond with my Barbie collection that I have decided to marry one of them. I have found the Country Bride Barbie to be the one I feel the greatest bond with. The wedding will be celebrated on the Barbie and Friends web site club for all to see. I have pictures posted at this time in anticipation of the blessed event. I have constructed a presentation box as much like Mattel would have made one for me as Cowboy Action Richard.

I now have over 150 Barbies and only about 5 are still in their box. Even the expensive ones. Not opening your dolls is like not reading comics. Sometimes the play line barbies have beautiful and rare color combinations like blond hair, brown or green eyes and brunette hair/blue eyes plus the collectible dolls rarely use the Teresa head which I prefer

I guess I really am a collector. I considered myself too grownup when *arbies first appeared, so of course I didn't have one. Well, I'm turning 55 next week and what I really want is *arbie stuff. I was introduced to the fun of collecting/playing with the dolls by my 5 year old grandson who loves them but has to be in the closet about them. His big Christmas wish was a dreamhouse...I found an older model to fix up and have been hooked ever since. I too, heartily endorse *arbies for boys. As Alex puts it, GI Joe just fights, *arbies have neat jobs. I also think boys and girls should play *arbies together so that little girls find out that sometimes Ken has to chase Godzilla away from the house. Keep them in the box? I really don't have the self discipline to look and not play with them.

I like your attitude! (Reply to this comment)

Though I've never been a big Barbie fan, I'm sure we'll be buying some soon since my doll-loving daughter has discovered them at daycare. When I do buy them, I'll follow the same philosophy that I do with Beanie Babies - pick ones that you want to play with and have fun! My kids ask me to cut the tags off their Beanie Babies and I do, even though it supposedly negates their value. They're toys, for goodness sakes!
BTW, I wanted to thank you for adding me to your WOT but I couldn't find an email address. I appreciate your trust and I'm looking forward to reading more of your reviews in the future. :)
