Please don't take beauty advice from Bozo the Clown

The Bottom Line Subtle, subtle, subtle! If you can't do blush subtly, don't do it at all.

Most of us don't want to look like Bozo. Unless of course you're an actual clown. The best way to achieve a clownish look? Blush.

First of all, pick a good shade. Just because pinks (or peaches or browns or whatever) are in doesn't mean you have to wear them. If you a trendy color doesn't suit you, you'll end up looking pretty crappy. And crappy is not cool.

So now that you've selected a shade that matches your skin tone--or at least a neutral shade that everyone can pull off--it's time to look at the brush. Basically, if it's not as wide as the area you're going to cover, it's no good. Remember coloring with markers, where the area that overlapped was always darker? Same effect.

Unless you are trained in makeup application, or perhaps just an amateur whiz, don't try to contour or shade. Keep the blush on your cheekbones. Contouring can be highly effective, but it can also be easily botched.

Please refrain from putting blush on just the apples of your cheeks. Remember the Bozo look we talked about? That's how you get it.

Another way you get it is by putting on too much, which is why I recommend sticking with powdered blush. You can pull off using a cream, but it's tricky. I save it for when I'm doing plays, and I need a little more "oomph." It's incredibly hard to control.

I can't stress enough to go easy on the blush! How many of us look at pictures of ourselves and say, "I look okay, except I'm wearing too much blush?" Certainly in old 80s pictures. Remember the 80s? Not a good look, was it? It's far better to err on the side of too little blush than too much.
If you're concerned that you're going too heavy on the blush, a couple of hints I use: tap the brush to get off excess powder. (I find this works better than blowing it off.) Also, put on blush before your powder, so you can set it, as well as help diffuse the color a little.

If all else fails, just go without the blush. I would rather look pale without blush than like I let a four-year-old put my makeup on for me! If you just can't bear with parting from your blush, try a light bronzer. When you put it on, put it where the sun hits your cheeks first. But as with blush, GO EASY on it. Subtly is the secret to success.
