Misleading item descriptions : Bought processors from them, they came OEM. Customer service said thats all that they sell, this was mentioned no where on their site or in the item description.
Update:
I thought I would clarify the review a bit since in my original I thought I had to keep it small (first review here). I'll try to give as many details as possible, and try to make it understandable to all.
I was looking to buy a CPU (computer processor, Pentium 4 to be exact) for my computer. A friend of mine decided he wanted to upgrade his computer at the same time, so we decided that we would purchase the CPUs together. We shopped around, but Tigerdirect.com was the only online store that had the processors at the speed we needed in stock the day we were ordering. They were a bit more than most stores were charging... The CPUs were priced around $230, where as some online stores wanted $210 for the retail boxed version. Was assumed for that price we would be getting the retail boxed version since the site had not listed anywhere that it would be different. Their shipping was also the lowest since some sites were calculating shipping based on the amount spent ($420 - $460).
So we select Tigerdirect, my first order from them, though I have browsed their site many times. On the day the CPUs arrive, I got a phone call from the friend I ordered with and he told me I should come look at the CPUs we ordered. When I got there what I found in the box were OEM Pentium 4 processors. OEM means that while your getting the same product, you getting something that was purchased in bulk buy a company, and it does not include accessories for the product as it would if it were the retail boxed version. OEMs also come without manufacturer warranty. Usually OEM items are priced LESS than retail boxed versions, and you usually get less which is what was the kicker for me, I had paid MORE for LESS. TigerDirect was offering these accessories separately, at an additional cost.
The CPUs were packaged very poorly. They themselves were packaged individually in a small plastic package with a piece of foam for padding on one side. There was a big sticker saying: "once opened, you cannot return". No instructions, no fan or heatsink (which are REQUIRED to keep the CPU from overheating), no heatsink compound ( interface material that transfers heat from the CPU to the heatsink, removing heat). The Cpus were shipped in a medium sized box, way too big for two processors. They were placed on the very bottom of the box with NOTHING underneath (CPUs are somewhat shock sensitive). The padding was placed on top of them, which made no sense to me because if dropped, the CPUS would have absorbed all of the shock. This concerned me.
After seeing how they were packaged, and the fact that no where does it state we would be getting OEMs (and I double checked), we decided to call them and see if we could return them since they had not been opened. Tigerdirect's customer service was pretty bad. The only info they could give us was "We only carry OEMs" and "We don't accept returns on processors, sealed or opened." They did not seem to care about the fact that they did not list them as OEM, nor did they care to assist us in anyway. They were abrupt, not pleasant but not rude either, and seemed to rush the call. But it was basically a brick wall "We don't sell non-OEMs, and we do not accept returns, opened or not. Is that all you need today?" -Not a direct quote, but that basically sums up what we got.
In the end after purchasing the other needed components, the CPUs did actually work, and I am using mine right now. However I could have done this at a much less cost, faster, and without the hassle if I had not gone with tigerdirect. Lesson learned. This event happened a few months ago, so things may have been changed by now. But seeing as how they did not seem to care to fix the problem, I highly doubt it. I have had more reliable, professional service from smaller stores.
Perhaps TigerDirect offers better service with other products, this was my only order from them.
I hope this helps someone out there, thanks for taking the time to read.
