The Bottom Line Look before you buy.

I remember when digital cameras first came out. I wanted one, but there was no way I was going to spend several thousand dollars on one. (I said the same thing about a CD burner, and yet I hove one of those, too.) Anyway, fast forward several years when my brother and I finally got around to buying one. We went over to K-Mart and bought a Fuji MX-1200 on sale for $199. I'm nor going to go into details. If you want to know more, it's the very first thing I wrote a review of on Epinions; you can get details there.

The only major consideration for us at the time was price, although you may want to consider other factors. Thus, the first thing you will have to do is buy batteries. Everyone I know who owns a digital camera has told me that the batteries drain rather quickly. We've been trying to get an adapter because we upload the pictures to the computer while the camera is on and this is another drain on the batteries.

Another consideration is whether or not the camera comes with everything you need. Any good camera should come with software and a data-transfer cable at the very least. At some point, you'll need to get your pictures from camera to computer. I'd be suspicious of any camera that doesn't let you do this right out of the box.

Another thing to consider is picture capacity. With a 32 MB chip, we can get around 50 pictures at the highest quality, although this will probably vary from model to model. My brother and I were thinking of installing the picture-transfer software on my father's laptop. This way, we'd have a place to store the pictures while away on vacation. The only problem would be getting them onto out desktop. (We'd probably have to install the LAN software on the laptop.)

When starting out, talk to friends and see if you can see how their camera works. This is by far the best way to see which of the features you want. Looking back, I almost wish I had gotten one with a better zoom. On the plus side, that's really my only regret.
