| pheed's Full Review: Grand Hotel Et De Milan |
Grand Hotel et de Milan: a curious name for an Albergo that has always been (and still is) a symbol of Milanese charme and elegance.
Inaugurated in 1863, the Hotel still mantains the same flavour it had in the old days. And after a major restoration in 1993, every guest room is fitted with state-of-the-art technology.
Getting here you can really breathe history: being really near the La Scala opera house it has been the residence of many national and international Vip: maria Callas, Rudolph Nureyev, Luchino Visconti, Ernest Hemingway, Gabriele D'Annunzio, Enrico Caruso and many, many others. Even the celebrated musician and composer Giuseppe Verdi lived here: he had a apartment here for many years and here composed some of his operas, in the suite that at present is bearing his name. Verdi also died here: legend has it, that the milanese, aware of the illness of the old maestro, covered the road (the same Via Manzoni) with a big layer of straw to make his last days less noisy.
Location. The Hotel is in the very middle of everything. Via Montenapoleone and the fashion district is 50mt. far. La Scala theatre and Piazza del Duomo not more than a 5 mins. walk... and the big, new Armani mall is just round the corner.
Rooms. Well fitted, of course. Rather plain in decor (every piece of furniture is antique, though), following the milanese style. Not very large at all, but comfortable... but if you need space, you can always have the deluxe rooms, or the suites. If you like or need to sleep with the windows open, get a room not on the front of the hotel. Traffic goes by all night long, and milanese don't use straw since those old Verdi's days. And, well, you don't want to pass away there, aren't you?
Restaurants. You'll have a choice of two: if you prefer a relaxed, more familiar atmosphere you can dine at the "Caruso". If style is all you need, then choose the "Don Carlos". In both you'll find italian cousine at its best: forget tagliatelle or cannelloni, here you'll have a better choice. And the wine cellar, under your feet, is unique: thousands of bottles sleep near the roman city walls that the Imperator Massimiano built in 250.
