The Bottom Line there is no bottom line

A lot of my favorite music reviewers on epinions have written various mix tape editorials. I decided my time to make up a mix tape had come and I began to embark on a little project. I was going to write Nick’s Political Mix Tape

WARNING: This Editorial contains some curse words, and it may anger you because I probably don’t have the same opinions as you do. Please rate this based on the editorial’s quality, not my opinions.

“If you don’t get turned onto politics, politics will turn on you”
- Ralph Nader (why didn’t you idiots vote for him? you’re actually not idiots, I’m just angered)

About a year ago, politics didn’t mean much to me. I really didn’t care. Maybe I was too young to care. Just recently I’ve become more interested in politics. Why the sudden change? The answer is music. Many of the bands I listen to have political lyrics, I used to not really care about lyrics, but no they’ve become very important. If you’ve ever read one of my music reviews you know that I think lyrics matter. I decided that I was going to make Nick’s Political Mix Tape. I may also weave some of my own political views in this review. If you disagree, more power to you. Of course these are my favorite political songs, so they’ll just by bands in musical genres I like (punk. hard-core, hip hop, ect). I usually don’t put lyrics in my music reviews, but I’m going to be putting a lot of lyrics is this review. Lyrics are what makes a song political. They are important for this review. This is just a little collection of my thoughts. Here is Nick’s Political Mix Tape.

Dead Kennedy’s - California Uber Alles
“California Uber Alles” is the song that got me into the Dead Kennedy’s. Jello Biafra writes awesome political lyrics. The Dead Kennedy’s are an awesome old skool punk band. Most punk bands have been influenced by DK in some way. I saw Jello Biafra speak at the University of Southern Maine and he was truly amazing. I don’t even like DK’s music, I just listen to them for their lyrics. Jello Biafra is one crazy mofo.

Dead Prez - They Schools
Dead Prez have one of the best hip hop records of the 90’s. I know that’s a bold statement, but it’s true. Let’s Get Free is an awesome album. “They Schools” is about how schools and America society in general are biased towards blacks. It makes some very good points. I have noticed that in my history class we hardly ever talk about Africa, just Europe. Why? Africans are people too, is their history not as important? Dead Prez tell it how it is. Whenever I listen to their record, I almost feel guilty for being white.
“They schools can’t teach us sh*t, my people need freedom, we trying to get all we can get, all my high school teachers can suck my d*ck, telling me white man lies straight bullsh*t.”

NWA - F*ck The Police
Police brutality is a huge issue in America. Racial profiling, and other forms of racism in the police are horrible things we need to get rid of. NWA shook the nation with this song. Many cops got angry. The issue of free speech also came up when NWA were told to censor their record. The beat on “F*ck The Police” is fairly simple, the lyrics don’t need a flashy beat.

Rage Against the Machine - Know Your Enemy
Back in the day,(three years ago) when I was 12 and I listened to the s/t Rage album, I never really cared about the lyrics. I was 12 I didn’t understand deep stuff like politics. I just like music that was heavy and fast. Now I’m 15 and I can comprehend political lyrics. “Know Your Enemy” is a fast aggro rock song. Zach De La Rocha is a very talented singer/rapper.
“What, the land of the free? Whoever told you that is your enemy.”

Bad Religion - American Jesus
Bad Religion are one of my favorite bands. Greg Gaffin’s agnostic lyrics are great. “America Jesus” is about how Christians run America, and ultimately hurt other people around the world with their ideals. “American Jesus” is a fast pop-punk song. As an atheist I think that it’s awful the groups like the Christian Civic League and the Christian Coalition play major roles in American politics. How dare they force their morals and ideals on me. Even if their religion is in the majority, it’s still wrong to hurt the people (like myself) that aren’t Christian.
“He’s the fuel that drives the Klan, (cave in)
he’s the motive and the conscience (we can redeem your sins)
of the murderer
he’s the preacher on TV (strong heart)
false sincerity
he’s the nuclear bombs (you lose)
and the kids with no moms (we win)”

Edwin Starr - War (what is it good for)
Now we’re kicking it old skool. I’m not a pacifist, but I’m kind of anti-military. For some reason the US has this messed up idea that we need to be able to fight two wars at all times. This is a huge waste of our tax dollars (I technically don’t pay taxes, but my parents do and legally I’m an extension of them.) Our government spends so much money on military because they need to buy things to keep weapons manufactures happy. Edwin’s Starr’s anti-war anthem “War” is a classic song that is still remembered today. If they ever brought back the draft you would find me in Canada, probably going to community collage. I pay taxes, I think I’ve given enough to this aweful nation. They already waste my tax dollars on military equipment we don’t need, how dare they force me to fight for them.
“They say we must fight to keep our freedom, but lord knows there’s a better way”

Dead Kennedy’s - Nazi Punks F*ck Off
Believe it or not, there is still a wealth of white supremacy groups around. Many of them cite God as there reason for hatetred. Not all hate groups are as obvious as the KKK. If only there was no religion, the world would be a better place. “ Nazi Punks F*ck Off” is probably DK’s most popular song. It’s a another fast punk rock song. Many bands, such as H2o and Napalm Death, have covered this song.
“Punk ain’t no religious cult, punk means thinking for yourself. You ain’t hard-core cause you spike your hair, when a jock still lives inside your head.”
“You think that swastikas are cool, when the real Nazis run your school. They’re coaches, businessmen and cops, in a real forth Reich.”

The Prodigy - Their Law
I figured I should put a techno song on here. The song “Their Law” was written in response to the law that made raves illegal. It is also one of the first Prodigy songs to use a guitar riff. The song doesn’t really have lyrics but it still gets its message across. Why should a gathering of people be outlawed? The government fears people in numbers. When people get together they share ideas and think, and we wouldn’t want that now would we?

Frankie Goes to Hollywood - 2 Tribes
You know I couldn’t leave Frankie Goes to Hollywood off this imaginary mix tape. “Two Tribes” was actually one of the songs Rage Against the Machine considered covering for their Renegades CD.

Peter Tosh - Legalize It
This reggae song by my man Peter Tosh has a fairly simple message. Although I do not use drugs, I believe that people should no be told what they can and cannot do to their own bodies. Sublime has done a cover of “Legalize It”.

NOFX - A Perfect Government
Allthough this song wasn't originally written by NOFX, it's still an awesome song.

Public Enemy - Fight the Power
PE is in full effect. Public Enemy are my favorite rap group. Terminator X is a very talented DJ, and Chuck D is a great emcee. “Fight the Power” is an anthem of political unrest. People are fed up. People are poor. People are tired. People are angry. What do these people do, they fight the power.

Propagandi - Stick the F*cking Flag up Your F*cking A$$ You Son Of a B*tch
Propagandi are a pretty good political punk band. Flag burning is currently legal, but there have been many attempts by stupid “patriots” that want to make it a crime. Yeah that sounds like a great idea, make free speech a crime. I once saw a funny political cartoon that had Smoky the Bear holding up a flag and he has saying “only you can prevent free speech.”
“But wait a minute dad, did you actually say freedom, if you f*cking dumb enough to vote, you’re f*cking dumb enough to believe them, cause if this country is so godamm free I can burn my flag as I d*mm well please.”

River City Rebels - The System
I just felt like adding this song. It’s a good ska/punk song that I’ve been listening to a lot lately.
”Fight tonight and you will see, fight tonight and we’ll be free”

and the final song is..... Ice T & Body Count - Copkiller
This song brought about so many protests. I can understand where Ice T is coming from to an extent. As a skateboarder I get harassed by the po po (ebonics are fun). Ice T did a rock album with Bodycount and for some reason (probably the violent lyrics, about killing cops) many people (especially cops) were angered.
“this next record is dedicated to some personal friends of mine, the LA PD, for every cop who has ever taken advantage of someone, beat em down or hurt em, because they got long hair, listen to the wrong kind of music, wrong color, whatever they though the reason was to do, for every one of those f*cking police, I’d like to take a pig out in this parking lot and shoot em in their mother f*cking face.”

Well that’s all. I think we’ve had fun with political songs. If I left out some that you thought should be on here email me, I’d love to hear your views. If you wanna argue with me about stuff just IM me. My screen name is LessThanNick1.
