I admit it. I am a snob. I like my scotch to be single malt, my herbs to be fresh, my coffee beans to be organic and preferably Jamaican, and my martinis to be very dry. A bartender I once knew strived to make my martini dry enough. In his attempt to get it right he did everything from waving a picture of a bottle of vermouth around the rim of my glass to swishing a bit of vermouth in his mouth and then breathing into my glass. It was a joke, of course. A real martini drinker will tell you, however, it is an incredibly fine line between straight gin, a dry martini, and a horrible mistake.
My father, who knows I like martinis, found a martini spritzer while out shopping last week. This is a small aluminum spray bottle which holds 1 and 1/2 teaspoon of vermouth. It comes with a funnel for easy filling. Just spray the inside of a martini glass with a spritz of vermouth and add gin. There is no chance of overdoing it.
We've been having fun all week with this martini spritzer. I took it with me to San Diego where I used it to make martinis at a friend's house. It works well everytime with nary a clog or sputter along the way. It comes apart easily and, as long as you're using the funnel, it fills easily. Wash up is a snap. It can go in the dishwasher, or just a few shakes with sudsy water and rinse to clean.
There really is a tool for every job. While most people could get by without a martini spritzer, if you want to make a perfect martini for your friends - you cannot.
At $12, this is a pricey little toy, but certainly not out of reach for the serious cocktail person.
