| ekaddo's Full Review: Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100/2000MHz With Win XP Pro |
The Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 has become an indispensable work tool. First let me give you the SPECS:
Processor: Mobile P-4
RAM: 512 GB
HD: 60 GB
CD: Combo DVR/CD-RW
Screen: 15 inches
NIC: Intel Pro AND 802.11b wireless built in
Modem: 56K
Accessories: Docking Station
Two USB Ports
Composite Video Out
SD slot for removable flash ram
Video: nVidia GeForce4 420 Go
DURABILITY:
My job demands a lot of travel (approx 90 overnights/year), this laptop has withstood the pounding that travel does to a laptop. In and out of the case for "inspection" at the airport, sliding around the overhead compartment in the airplane, and regular use on the road. The only signs of wear and tear are my sons fingerprints on the screen.
FEATURES:
With a docking station, this is truly a desktop replacement. In the office I can use the wireless NIC to connect to the network while giving PowerPoint presentation that needs Internet/Network access. Also the video card supports dual independent screens, so in the office I keep Outlook on the laptop screen and do my work on a connected 21" monitor. The ability to drag windows from one monitor to the other effectively doubles the screen space I can look at and allows me to multi-task with ease.
When I have a long airplane ride, the battery life and DVD player are a combination that provides for my entertainment.
Another asset if the CD-RW, I use it quite often and it never fails, in addition I am still able to work and muti-task while using the burner. However adding windows media player to that combination whill cause hiccups (this doesn't happen on my Xeon P4 workstation, but that's another story).
The built-in NIC and large HD are a combination that allow me to get a lot of work done when on the road (loading software and disk images, on the fly "soft" backups etc).
SUPPORT:
Toshiba's online support has been all I need to use so far. The one problem I have had with the laptop is that it will not always connect with my Linksys Wireless Access Point. They have a knowledge base topic that addresses this issue and I was able to get back to business. Also, toshiba's preinstalled software checks the toshiba site whenever you connect to the internet in order to update your system software and drivers. I like the website because it is functional and easy to use. I do not have any experience with their phone based support.
HOW CAN TOSHIBA IMPROVE THIS MACHINE:
With all this RAM, and Processor Power, the bottleneck becomes the Hard Drive. This machine could benefit from a faster hard drive. But this is a MINOR issue.
The built in speakers could be better (also MINOR)
With such a large hard drive, I can forsee the need for a firewire port for utilizing a digital camcorder while on the road.
