Is there any child that actually enjoys shopping for new socks or underwear? If so, feel free to send them to my house to give my boys lessons on tolerance. Three or four times a year we make our way to a variety of clothing stores to pick up new clothes and that often involves underwear and socks not exactly the most fashionable topic in the Clothing section of Epinions, but a general necessity nonetheless. These little shopping trips are usually as exciting as watching paint dry so when I try to make them as brief as possible. Planning and accurate foot sizes are your best defense against moans and groans from the little people so make sure you know what you are after before you arrive at the store. When shopping for socks one of the biggest things to take into consideration is size, followed up by the time of year the socks will be worn. No one wants to wear thick heavy socks in the dead of summer and no one would want to wear these low cut ones when the temperature starts to drop.
These socks are great for kids that have mastered the art of putting on their own socks [2 and older] since they are low cut there isnt a lot of material that needs to be pulled up. For the older kids these are great for the summer months and are a true blessing for kids that dont have the freshest smelling feet less material less stink. When the boys head down to the beach and wear their water shoes they sometimes wear these under them to prevent the rubber inside the shoe from sticking to their feet. This creates a little bit of a mess when it comes time to wash them [tons of sand] but after all, they are socks and they are fulfilling their destiny to protect feet.
Cost
Ive seen these marked at both $5.99 and $6.99 and no one could give me an answer as to why there way a price difference. I took up two packages of socks to the register, one had no price on it and scanned at $6.99 and the other package was marked at $5.99 but scanned at $6.99 however they honored the price that was marked on the package. Unless your child is extremely fond of this particular brand of socks, the way they feel or the cut you can get a better price at Wal-Mart and Target on the same item. I received several gift certificates for JC Penney and used them for the essentials that the boys needed. If you are a true blue JC Penney shopper and your child will wear this cut and style of sock these are the way to go.
These Are Comfy Socks Mummy
When I first starting picking up these socks for the summer time the boys hated them and insisted that they were baby socks however after they saw how easy they were to get on and off the tune changed. The socks are made of a blend of cotton, nylon and polyester with a small amount of Lycra to give them the ability to stretch out a little. After they got used to the low cut style the boys would wear no other type of sock in the summer with their tennis shoes. When the weather changes they always ask for longer socks which gives me the chance to pick out the ones that need to be recycled [they make excellent dust clothes]. These do have a little more static cling than other socks so if you dont normally use a softener you might want to with these.
Sizes
These are available in three size small, medium and large. There is a convenient size chart on the back of the package to tell you exactly which size you will need for your child so check out that chart before you make a purchase. Ive only purchased the medium and large size for the boys and they fit their feet snuggly but werent so tight that they were uncomfortable. My oldest son wears a size 5 shoe and the large size seems just right for him although when he hits his next growth spurt Im sure hell need to move up to a larger size even though these are supposed to fit shoe sizes 1 9 [boys, not toddlers].
Durability
Im not sure if there is a technical term for it but my boys are all shufflers. For some reason they unconsciously shuffle their feet when they are doing homework, reading, playing video game or watching television. This means that the heels of the socks get a tremendous amount of wear and tear and are often where the holes first start to appear. There arent any reinforced parts to the sock so if you have a child that refuses to have his toenails cut chances are the toe sections will be the first to go. Since these are low cut socks it might take a while for a child to get used to the feel of them, I know the boys spent the first week or so constantly pulling them up and they often said that these felt like they were sliding down into their shoes.
Washing
Since one of my boys has allergic reactions to bleach and strong laundry detergents I have to wash all the whites in extremely hot water with a fragrance free detergent. Most of the time I wash the whites twice to make sure that they are as clean as possible [using a little less soap the second time] to make sure that all the detergent is rinsed out of them. So far these have come clean almost every single time. The exceptions were blood from a blister, ground in dirt [we are talking mega dirt in the shoes] and jumping in rain puddles that were actually half mud and half water. Barring these instances, the socks always remained bright white without the use of bleach. If you have a kid that is tough on socks or refuses to take the socks off until they can walk around themselves these would be a good investment.
The Bottom Line
So far Ive only had to toss out about four or five socks out of about four packages of socks. Considering the amount of wear, tear and shuffling these socks go through as well as being washed in hot water they far exceeded my expectations. The cut of the sock is low and it might take a child that isnt used to this style a little bit of time to get used to it. These arent the only types of socks that they boys have but for the summer months they are their favorite to wear. They are easy to get off and on and even though they are on the thin side they provide a lot of protection against tennis shoes rubbing against their feet.
As always, thanks for the visit!
