| jepenny's Full Review: Wall Street Journal |
Being a type of college student that is an information sponge, I spend quite a bit of time reading up on current events. The Wall Street Journal is a must read if you are a business major, or in the business world. Just like the New York Times is to international reporting and the Washington Post is to politics, the Wall Street Journal is the in-depth source for business.
Front Page:
The look has gone a change over the past summer. The paper has introduced color in the front page, which had been black and white for as long as the newspaper has been printed if I recall correctly. They have added photos at the bottom and have made the paper a little more appealing the eye. This is fine with me, as long as it doesnt distract the news portion. Other than that it's the same 6 column wide paper and the same format, even down to the drawings of the people's faces. On the far left column is a business related story, typically about a company or industry. The next two consists of the the "What's News" area which will provide the main stories in the paper and the page on which it's on. Column 4 will always have an off beat story such as one the 18th of Februarys issue entitled "Calculating Collector: Fans of Slide Rule Count on Mr. Shawlee." Also on column 4 and spills over to 5 is a story that the Journal will only devote to one that is exclusive to their investigative reporting, unless there is something that takes more precedence. Finally column 6 is a story that is generally international or business in nature.
Front Section:
This will list the main stories going on in business and the world. They do a good job of mixing the stories together so you don't get all the general news or business news in chunks. However the international section will have a little more devotion to foreign policy such as North Korea and whatnot. It depends on what the editors want to place in there. Finally to cap it off, you have the op-ed section which is a joy to read to get peoples opinions.
Marketplace:
This section mainly focuses on the impact of things on marketing and careers. Here you will find marketing tips, what companies are doing, new product lines etc. This is also photo filled and has a lot of color on the front page, which is showing off the new color technology that the Journal has invested money into.
Money and Investing:
This is of course geared towards investors. You will find mainly stock quotes, commodity trading, currency values and other goodies. This section is pretty self explanatory.
Personal Journal:
This section is geared at creating a personal link to the news. This section will have arts, travel, health, family, and other things.
Weekend Journal:
This comes out on Friday (obviously). This is mainly for people to kick back and read something different than quotes, P/E ratios and other news. This is the only time that you will generally see a Sports writer show up in the text.
Conclusion:
This is a must read like I said if you are a business person. However, this is not just for the investor as they have gone lengths to make the newspaper have something for everyone.

Describe the newspaper's political views: It is moderate
