Nice place to visit. People are helpful, friendly and curious if they know you are foreign.
Visited small towns around. Hotin, to the north where there is castles, Kosiv, to the west has a big market. Many things to see and visit. Buildings in Chernivtsi (Ukraine in general) have ornate designs built into them that are not found in the west. The university in Chernivtsi was built in the early 1800's and is still being used today. It was constructed of brick and stone as were most buildings in Ukraine. You need an alumni to tour it which should not be hard to find. The local theater is very nice and a good experience. Don't expect to understand the story line unless you understand Ukrainian or Russian.
The outside market on the north edge of Chernivtsi is big. It has many vendors and lots of different items. A guide is definitely recommended. There are many outdoor vendors and markets on the streets. Almost anything can be found here. Be careful about buying any food such as meat or dairy products on the street. In a grocery store be careful about opening a cooler and "helping yourself". It is custom to ask for an item in the cooler. Not all places, but some are like this.
Cheap food in restaurants and stores. Great selection of stores for Ukrainian goods. Cheap items for gifts found on the street from vendors. The Cheremosh hotel is a nice place. It is cheap compared to anywhere in the west. It is clean and has good food. i.e. 4 people full meal with wine and desert $36.00 Canadian. There are cafes and restaurants throughout the downtown and city but may be hard to find without a guide to read signs.
Most stores are well stocked. Almost everything you could find in the west is there except most local people cannot afford things.
There is a big park within walking distance from downtown. It has a cafe and a market. Interesting to see. lots of people there all the time.
Chernivtsi is an excellent place to visit. Lots of history and architecture to see.
The nightclub Arastotle is located in a part of the city called Graviton. Not really much here except the nightclub. A must to check out if you want to see the nightlife but again go with a guide and translator.
The village of Sadgora is on the north of town. Not much there really. It has a sawmill and a few Soviet buildings that were converted when they took over. One is an old Jewish Church that is almost wrecked now. The Jewish cemetery is BIG. Someone told me there is over 1000 head stones and many more that are wrecked from time. There is a small cafe/nightclub if you feel like going there.
Generally i would not recommend going here or even to the Ukraine if you expect things to be like at home. Things are very different compared to what most westerners are accustomed to. It is a good adventure and very interesting but would not recommend it for a honeymoon unless you want an adventure type getaway.
