| weiliang's Full Review: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 Professional for W... |
Since the release of the first flight simulator by Microsoft, it has received nothing but praises for it's realistic flight models and dynamics. Flight Simulator 2002 Pro is no exception.
The most notable evolution from the previous Flight Simulator series is the implementation of a revolutionary Air Traffic Control communications system. With just a few key presses, you can request for take-off clearance, taxi clearance, landing clearance and other radio communications. The options may be rather basic but it is sufficient and the radio chatter makes flying even more realistic.
In Flight Simulator 2002 pro, you are presented with a wide variety of high performance aircraft. From the nimble and acrobatic Extra 300S to the heavy and powerful Boeing 747-400, you can pick any that suits your preference or mood. Other aircraft in the Flight Simulator 2002 pro fleet include: Learjet 45A, Cessna Skylane and Caravan series, Bell Jetranger, Mooney Bravo, Beechcraft Baron and King Air, Sopwith Camel, Schweizer thermal glider and F4U-1A Corsair. The flight models are extremely accurate and the flight dynamics are almost impeccable. You can easily reassign the default keys from the options and the sensitivities of the flight controls can also be tuned. The multiple camera views also allow you to view the aircraft from different angles. Other subtle details include the aircraft registration markings, landing gear suspension and wing flaps/slats among many others. You can also download other add on aircraft from the internet.
There many different modes of flight available in Flight Simulator 2002 pro. For learners, you can fly the training flights which were specifically created to accommodate student pilots. If you are feeling adventurous, try flying the pre-planned scenarios included inside Flight Simulator 2002 pro. You can also file your own flight plans or create your own unique flights. With the integrated flight planner, you are able to file flight plans and select the form of routing you desire. The flight routes are all based on real life airways but the direct GPS routes are mostly just point to point routes. You can also review the Nav Log after planning the flight and a map conveniently displays all the aeronautical facilities and airways available. Once all these has been properly configured, the flight can be set on auto pilot and the onboard computers will take over the aircraft while you sit back and sip a cup of coffee.
The graphics in Flight Simulator are accurately modeled to reflect real life components. Mountains extend high into the air and rivers stretch across acres of greenery. Auto generation of weather and AI traffic makes the virtual environment jump into life, providing you with a superb representation of the real world to fly in. The effects incorporated into Flight Simulator 2002 pro are also very entertaining. It is satisfying to watch a 747 touch down with smoke trailing from it's main landing gears and observing the contrails from high altitude aircraft. Overall, the graphics are extremely well done.
Sound effects in Flight Simulator 2002 pro are also very entertaining. The high pitched shriek of the Learjet's turbo fans instills into you the sensation of performance and power. Rumbling cockpit noises in the 747 makes you feel like you're on the flight deck. And radio chatter adds to the realism and professionalism of aerial travel.
If there was one thing bad about Flight Simulator 2002 pro, it would have to be it's steep learning curve. As the name suggests, Flight Simulator 2002 pro closely resembles the real life requirements for flying an aircraft. You would need to dedicate some time to learning the various controls and functions if you are new to aviation. Most important of all, you have to learn how to navigate your aircraft unless you want to fly on autopilot all the time. Real life pilots will find no difficulty in playing the game and for extra realism, you can even print out flight charts and aircraft manuals to accompany your flights.
Microsoft's Flight Simulator 2002 pro is a godsend for the aviation enthusiast. A good yoke or joystick will also enhance your virtual flying experience. Happy landing!
