Please note that this review applies to BOTH the online store and the walk-in stores. There is no category for Home Depot's walk-in stores so I was advised to put this review here.
I've shopped at Home Depot for over ten years. They are located relatively close to my home and have good prices on their products.
However, the stores have some serious problems that even though people complain about, have yet to be rectified. The employees that work in these stores, with few exceptions, don't care about being helpful. They will walk right by you without even asking you if you need help. They will usually avoid eye contact with you for fear that you might ask them a question.
One time, I "cornered" an employee and asked him to price check an item. I waited there for five minutes and then went to look for him. I found him chatting with someone else, having completely forgot about doing the price check for me.
And why do I even have to wait for a price check? Why can't these guys take some time and mark their products? Why is that so hard to do?
The selection is poor as well. There was a wall full of display models for exterior lamps yet only a few models were actually available. I asked one employee about that and he said that they haven't had a chance to remove the discontinued models yet. I went back a few weeks later only to find that the same discontinued models were still on the wall!! Exactly how long should it take these guys to take the discontinued stuff down?
Recently, a Lowes went up nearby and after visiting them, I found that they are far, far better than any Home Depot I've ever seen. The Lowes was neat, orderly, clean, well stocked, and employees were very helpful and had a better attitude. The employees at Lowes did a great job in helping me and as such, I now exclusively shop at Lowes.
The online Home Depot store unfortunately does not have the full catalog of products that the stores have but it's a very well organized website that quickly helps you get around and locate the products you are looking for.
But you can find the same type of organization in the Lowes website as well so there's nothing here to motivate you to shop at Home Depot since you have access to the Lowes website as well.
If your project does not involve having to actually go into a Home Depot and you can do everything online, then there's no problem with using the Home Depot website. Even though the order I placed did not come in on time, I'm sure it was a fluke and so I can overlook that issue.
But if you need to actually go into the store, then I can't emphasize this enough, STAY AWAY FROM A HOME DEPOT STORE. For the reasons I listed above, you are far better off working with Lowes where you will be better treated and find a bigger selection of products as better prices.
My feeling is that I would rather not give Home Depot any of my business, including the online business because of the way the walk-in stores handle their customers. I like to reward a store for its' all-around performance not just one segment of it's sales outlets.
