The Bottom Line Socks can be an important part of an outfit and if a child
hasn't the correct socks, it can make them stand out and
feel different.
I was going to hold back on this category, but I've decided to jump right in with both feet. I know this is really meant to be about outdoor gear, so let me first get my ideas on the subject out of the way. As I used to do a bit of walking in the Scottish mountains, I can recommend a decent pair of woollen walking socks to go with your hiking boots, and do be sure to fold them down over the boots to stop little bits of bracken and other vegetation getting stuck between the boot and the sock. And another tip is to have a thin pair of socks underneath the thick woollen ones - this should help to prevent blisters forming, especially if you've just bought new boots. The other reason would be if you don't like the feel of wool directly on your skin - a thin cotton pair may actually feel more comfortable. ------------------------------- So, now to my story... When I first went to school, there was a grey uniform and the option was to wear either grey or white socks. My mother, being a thrifty soul, had saved my brother's socks so off I went to school in grey socks. And did I hate it? Yes! All the other little girls were in white socks, and here I was in grey ones. The school photograph shows this clearly - I was right in the middle of the front row. I wonder if this was deliberate, so that it would look neater that way. It is a black and white photo, but still it's pretty obvious that my socks are different. And, interestingly, my sister probably also wore these same socks, but it doesn't seem to have been an issue for her. But my mother remembers that I had an awareness of clothes at around the age of three when I refused to wear a cardigan because it didn't match. But the sock issue was more to do with being different, and not only different but like the boys. I think I did have white socks but only for Sunday wear, and I really was desperate to have pretty white socks to wear to school. And yes, this is something I have brought up with my parents and complained about to my mother. I suppose she just didn't realise the effect that being different would have on me. In a way, it was a good test of being able to stand up for myself, as I do remember being teased. What this experience has done for me is to make me aware of how a child hates being differently dressed from their peers, and I will be much more aware when my daughter gets older that clothes are very important in fitting in to one's environment, and hopefully more understanding about the latest fashion fad. |
