Pros: No more wires on the desk top. Now I can move my keyboard freely.
Cons: Distance from receiver, somewhat restricted.
The Bottom Line: By moving the keyboard to my lap, or a table, I have freed up needed desktop space. The mouse cord does not get tangled, since there is none.

Free at last, free at last, thanks to Belkin Im free at last! The Belkin Wireless Keyboard and Mouse have freed me from the confines of the desktop and the entangling wires of the conventional devices. We tend to take familiar things for granted, and what can be more familiar to the computer user than the keyboard? I had been plodding along with my 10-year-old standard keyboard for so long, that I barely noticed it. Eventually, it started to wear, keys stuck, key labels vanished and the operating system did not always recognize its existence upon boot-up. It was time to replace it. The fancy new wavy models just did not look or feel right to me, but some of the special key features were appealing. Then I came upon the Belkin Wireless Keyboard and Mouse and I immediately realized that here was the best of both worlds. The keyboard looked like a keyboard to me, its feel was even better than my old one and it had a number of special buttons designed for just the sort of tasks that I use my computer for. On the very top of the keyboard there are 9 special buttons. These are for the Internet and for multimedia applications.
The Internet keys are: Repeat, Favorites, Search, Mail and www (to go directly to the URL bar on your browser). The multimedia keys are Play/stop, Volume Up, Volume Down and Mute.
The biggest difference between the Belkin and my old keyboard was the interface; this is a wireless connection. In addition to the keyboard and mouse, there is a Receiver that has two color coded PS2 connectors, one for the keyboard and one for the mouse. These plug directly into your computer just like the traditional device connectors. The keyboard and mouse each contain 2 AAA batteries that are supplied with the package. Just place them in the battery compartments. Then with the computer off, plug the receiver into the proper PS 2 ports. Turn the computer on and the receiver will automatically scan for the keyboard and mouse. The LEDs on each will flash and they will be functional. If the automatic synchronization does not work for a device, just press the Reset Button on the device and it will be recognized.
Once both units are functional, place the CD in your drive and follow the on screen prompts. This will activate the special function buttons on the keyboard and allow you to set the mouse parameters such as; right/left hand operation, click speed, tracking speed, pointer type and mouse trails. The installation went just as described in the well-illustrated manual on both Windows 98SE and XP Professional computers.
They keyboard has a great tactile feel to the keys and the ability to move it about freely is wonderful, I can store it in a drawer, place it on the desktop, bring it to a worktable or place it on my lap. There is even a very well designed wrist rest. Of course all the standard 104-key keyboard features are present including the Windows key that brings up the START menu for Windows 95/98/Me/NT/XP. The keys are quiet, no clicking noise. The feel is solid and I have been quite pleased with this keyboard for the past month that I have been using it. I really find those special Internet keys useful and they even work on AOL, which is notorious for proprietary software.
The mouse is large enough to be quite comfortable in my hand and the scroll wheel works great. There is very good control of the scroll rate and that makes it ideal for reading long documents. It works equally well on the web and Office documents, and I have yet to find a scroll application that it is not compatible with.
The use of these wireless products has enhanced my computer experience; I spend a great deal of time on the machine and do a wide range of functions. All have been made better by this product; I can heartily recommend it. Best of all, you get that comfort feeling knowing that it is a Belkin product and therefore well made.
