Great disappointment

Written: Mar 26 '03
Pros:CCD element
Cons:False capabilities advertising and no support
The Bottom Line: Through the internet - its usefulness is very limited and does not justify the price. Private network is a limited OK.

The Veo Observer is an example of how to make a good idea into a bad end product just by using bad software and providing no support.
The camera is a good piece of hardware but its internal program is no good.

Cons:
(1) Practically no support; advertised telephone support does not exist and e-mail support does not even acknowledge receiving the questions; for past 2 weeks I am waiting for answers;
(2) The advertised 10 frames per second (10 fps) is poor and in real life does not exist; through a very fast internet connection I was able to obtain 0 to 1 (yes Zero to One) frame per second;
(3) Frequent lock-ups that can only be reset manually by turning the power off - cannot do it remotely;
(4) No adapter or info on Power-over-Ethernet (POE);
(5) does not work with any devices that does not use desktop MS Internet Explorer; i.e.: it does NOT work with Netscape Navigator, Opera, any Linux box, any portable device such as WinCE, PocketPC, telephones or other devices that can connect to other cameras with normal servers;
(6) It does not have a server as advertised - what it has is a push ActiveX and nothing else. It would be nice if VEO either provided a choice of software that could be downloaded into the camera or made ActiveX and Java or just a generic server that could truly work with most of devices;
(7) It is not truly self-contained device; it only works through internet if your ISP has fixed IP address assigned to you. It does not have ability to log-in to PPPoE ISP services or those that require a log-in. On you r local network it will work with assigned local addresses, but than you need to play with your firewalls, proxy servers, etc. to get it to work, and if you are lucky it may work.
(8) Only one connection to the camera at a time is possible.

If VEO provides a timely update to the internal program this might become a very interesting product - until than - know what you are doing and why.
