Pros: Great Sound... Enough features for a simple setup
Cons: Stupid remote, rather annoying to set up at times
The Bottom Line: A great receiver for the money - make sure you demo it if you're in the market for a receiver.

| holeydonut2k3's Full Review: Yamaha RX V795A Surround Sound AV Receiver |
First off, let me state that this receiver is a great middle-of-the-road unit that will suit most users just fine. It has a very poor remote control, but that shortcoming does not mask the great sound and features that are available with the 795a. Also, note that you CANNOT BUY this model at Best Buy. The model series that this unit falls under is superior to that which you will find at Best Buy. There is a definite difference in quality and sound if you opt to shop in stores that specialize in home theatre / audio equipment.
I bought this receiver as the centerpiece of a home theatre setup that would let me have all my components (sans TV) for about $1500. Do not consider this receiver unless you're willing to spend at least $400 on some good speakers. By good - I am referring to speakers that you do not find in the "bargain bin" isle at Best Buy. Sample some Acoustic Research, Paradigm, Wharfdale, Polk, etc speakers at your local shop. You will appreciate the clean electric waves that comes out of this receiver's amplifiers... but you need good speakers to actually produce the sound.
For most applications, you will find the range of inputs perfectly acceptable for your various components. This particular model may not have enough S-Video inputs, so you may want to look at Yamaha's 995 unit. Work with your salesman to determine if the 795a will offer enough for you. If it's okay - you won't find the 995 being a necessary model over the 795.
You can get incredible volumes out of the 795a and you will find it's ability to stay operating at continuous loud volumes to surpass expectations. I have used this receiver at a couple college parties where the volume knob was about 3/4 the way up the dial for almost 4 hours straight. No problems, and it is still going strong.
The remote control is only sour spot that I have for this unit. It is HORRIBLE. No adjectives give justice to how frustrating it is to use and how stupid it is. My dealer was kind enough to offer me the remote control from the 995 model to use in my 795a. See if you can't have a similar negotiation as the learning abilities and robust features of the remote with the 995 are a definite improvement over the 795a's remote control.
Once you get past the poor interface, configuring the 795a is extremely flexible and allows you to compensate for your home theatre speaker positions and room dimensions. This is a definite plus over cheaper receivers.
