| rbr28's Full Review: Dynamat 10415 10 x 10 Xtreme Vibration Damping |
I had my doubts about how well this stuff would work, but I was able to get a Dynamat Extreme door kit for only $57 so I decided to give it a try in my new S10 pickup. I figured if nothing else it should reduce road noise a little, and any bit in a truck helps. I also was already taking the door panels off to install speakers so it wasn't much extra work. When I took off the doors I noticed that the vehicle already had a really cheap, thin, plastic like cover over the metal part of the door (kept on with a little bit of tack). Because of this and other reasons I decided to do something different with the Dynamat. It would have been difficult to cover the whole metal door with Dynamat because of all the cutouts, and if I had just covered it all, it would have been very difficult to get to anything if I ever had problems with the door locks or anything that was inside the door. For that reason I decided to dynamat the plastic door panel itself. I was able to completely cover the whole plastic door panel, and I figured this was actually as likely to resonate and cause unwanted vibration, as the metal door panel was. After doing all that I still had some Dynamat left over so I covered much of the back wall of the truck, below the rear window. I had the truck a month before doing this, and drove it for about a month afterwards. The difference is very noticeable and everyone who gets in the vehicle notices it immediately. Road noise is greatly reduced. You barely hear vehicles driving by, I can listen to my stereo with the volume on 2 or 3 and it's very easy to hear, the system stays very clear at high volumes (with a sub in the truck), etc. I haven't eliminated all noise from outside the vehicle but I have no doubt after hearing the difference that Dynamats claim of a 3-6db reduction in noise is easily obtainable. An added bonus is that the stuff insulates very well. Just like any insulation it will keep you cooler with the air on, and warmer with the heat on, again this is immediately noticeable if you cover enough of an area. Anyway, I love this stuff and although it seems somewhat expensive, it's a relatively low cost way to greatly improve the listening environment inside your vehicle, if you have a quality stereo system. I'll probably wait a little while to do more work on my vehicle, but I definitely plan to buy another Dynamat Extreme kit and cover more of the rear panel, and I'm also going to try to do much of the floor of the vehicle. I'm not sure this stuff would work as well in a very expensive vehicle with extensive sound proofing, but in my vehicle it worked wonders. Anyway, if you have the money give this stuff a try, I don't think you will be disappointed.
