| gaelkm's Full Review: Canon i 550 Ink-jet Printer |
We recently purchased a new CANON i550 PERSONAL COLOR PRINTER.
My two sons convinced me that we really needed one and come to think of it, we did. Our old printer, a Lexmark, was about 8 years old, unreliable, and slower than molasses on a cold day!
So off we went to COMP USA. I'd had it in the back of my mind that we might need one anyway, and had been scoping out the prices of printers. I knew a ballpark figure of what it might cost.
We browsed the aisles and found several good brands and choices of models. I then saw some Canon printers and felt that this would be the brand for us. Good brand name, good quality and good reputation, and the price was right! We talked it over for a few minutes with the salesman, and compared a few of the other printers with the Canon i550 and fairly quickly, decided that the Canon i550 would be right for us.
The Canon i550 Personal Printer is fast! The paper never jams. To print out a regular page of typed text takes mere seconds! The color is wonderful! Of course, all I have to compare it to is our old slow Lexmark, but it is amazing how beautiful the colors are and I am very impressed also with the quality of the print on the page. Very clear and clean. Canon claims that the ink droplets are more precise and "less grainy resulting in good detail and good resolution". I can't argue with them. I have found everything they claim to be true. This is known as "Canon i550, Microfine Droplet Technology."
The price we paid was $149, but at COMP USA they had a mail-in rebate ticket next to the display printer for $30, so you end up paying approximately $119, which by comparison was a bit lower than the lesser-known brands (in my book).
The size of the printer is good also. We have limited office space in our little condo, so this was a consideration when making our decision. It is slightly larger than our old printer, but still compact enough to easily fit on our computer desk shelf. It comes with a slide-out tray that you can close when not printing, so it stays out of the way.
As a test, my son, Randall ("Pffrdfdus7") took a digital photo of my younger son, Garrett, to print out on our new Canon i550 printer. He told me that he then used a USB cable, plugged it into both the computer and the camera, and the computer then transferred the photo from the digital camera. He saved it as a jpg and printed it out with the Canon i550 onto glossy photo paper, a sample of which was included when we bought the printer. We were all quite amazed at how it looked so much like an actual photo you would pick up at your local photo processing lab. The quality was excellent and clear.
The Canon i550 Specifications are:

(Update July 13, 2003: After regular use of our Canon Color Printer for approximately four months, we were just given a warning that the black cartridge was low on ink. A quick check on Comp USA's website shows that we can purchase a black ink cartridge for this printer for approximately $11.99.)
Canon says that you can "create outstanding borderless edge-to-edge prints supports Exif Print, the new standard for optimizing print quality of digital camera images on your Canon printer."
(Canon 4x6" photo paper Glossy sample pack included.)
I think you will be very pleased with quality and performance of the Canon i550 Personal Printer as much as we are, if you are on the market for a new printer.
