There will probably never be a solve all solution to adware and spyware. I noticed the same thing you commented about when I tried using adaware. I chickened out and didn't delete anything. Like you, I'm not a novice but no expert either. If I deleted something important or the deletion of the spyware caused problems with other files, I'd probably have a hard time figuring out what the hell went wrong.

On the one hand, you can't really blame Lavasoft and on the other, they should at least warn you that you might screw something up and you should back up your files. Some people don't know this and I don't think they should really be expected to.

Then again, the program is free and it does what it says it does. It's a tough call but I'd probably rather just do a reformat in the first place, rather than wasting time trying to figure out what I did wrong.

I searched Lavasoft's website and the readme and help files in my version of Ad-aware(5.83), and could not find these warnings.

I did add a note to my review that there is now a newer version of Ad-aware.

This review strikes me as unfair. Ad-Adware warns new users that:

1. Some spyware programs will disable the program they came with if they're unloaded (e.g., Kazaa).

2. Some programs have been known to corrupt installations when they're removed, so you should back up your system registry and other files before trying to run it.

From what you wrote (and having seen this happen before), it's pretty obvious that one of the spyware programs corrupted your Winsock installatation when you removed it.

I understand why you're mad. But shouldn't you be mad at the spyware for hosing you during the removal process?

If Ad-Aware always broke Winsock, obviously it would deserve one star for making the problem worse. But I've run across that issue only 5-10% of the time-- never consistently-- so I don't think we can blame the manufacturer entirely, as you do.

You might also want to mention the quarantine option, what this program costs, how you get it, how it works (you need to run manually), options available (scan disk or memory or both, delete or backup files, etc), what system you were running this on, how you update Ad-Aware, etc.
