The Bottom Line Let your little one decide when its the right time to potty. It will easier on both of you.
“Great, now that Chelsea is two, I can stop buying diapers!” I said that a year ago. My oldest daughter, Hannah, was completely potty trained by age two, and wearing those cute little printed panties; Cinderella was her favorite. Chelsea just turned three, and is a master at fooling Mom. I will say, “Chelsea, do you need to go potty?” She says, “OK.”, then right away, before we even take a step toward the bathroom, says, “No, Mama. No potty.” Its done that quickly. Chelsea loves to wear potty panties (little printed girlie underwear). She looks like ‘big sisser’, and will even do a little bootie shake dance to show them off. And she is the first to come to me with them in her hands with wet legs, and a new pair in hand. I try to explain that the pee pee needs to be in the potty. She nods, and hands me the new ones. Then, there is good old parental pressure. Hannah was an old potty pro by age three. It doesn’t help that she says Chelsea will wear a diaper to her wedding. Chelsea’s best little friend decided that she would use the potty because her Mom told her that Chelsea wore potty panties. Argh! She now uses the potty every time. She’s two. Of course, cost is an issue. Diaper packages get smaller and more expensive the older the child is. Pull ups are just plain expensive no matter how they package them. And washing wet underwear every day is just a pain, not to mention hard on the water bill. It comes down to this: no matter how badly I want her to use the potty, she will do it when she is ready. Not when I’m ready. No amount of pressure, bribery, or trickery will make her do it any sooner than she wants to. Doing those things, I am risking having it take longer, because she will be apprehensive and uncomfortable. Hopefully, Hannah’s prophecy is wrong, and she won’t wear diapers to her wedding. |
